I think it ships next month, at least from what I can tell (MF says 5-15). I have been real interested in it since it was annouced. I heard that the last electribe had a few little problems when switching sequences or something, which is why I am curious on how it actually functions (there are always some quirks with these things and it might not have midi like they say...or like people would expect).

A sampler samples sounds so why would you need to load samples when you can just sample samples??? Any SP will work, if you need only 4 samples at a time a KP3 will let you tap... If you use the SP as a timing source you can just tap your pedals to it, and I'm not sure what you would be running on the MK that would need to have the tap...

The MPXs don't actually sample sounds they just play back what you load, I have the 8...

All good points and I had similar questions....esp. the one about the tap on the MK but I just wanted to try to stick with the OP as best as possible. Every sampler I used I used the line in (or mic) to just sample.

KP3 is a good suggestion though.

Not picking on this op but there seems to be a lot talk about a lot of gear where it's just "I want this to do this even though it wasn't designed that way because that's the way I want it"... Again not picking but I think when you understand why stuff was designed the way it is and you understand how things work together and what actually makes sense production wise you'll see that most stuff can be accomplished without manufactures having to reinvent the wheel with every product... MIDI hasn't changed in 30+ years and people still don't understand it...

Anyway I would like to help on your quest cause I love samplers and have been annoying people with them since 1985...

I totally understand. I was trying to explain the Roland S-330 to a dude that though it was trying to use it to play loops in a DJ setting (sample on the fly, replay, etc). I've always had a thing for samplers also...but it has been difficult to kind of dance around the restrictions.

Have you ever used that microGranny, Soni? It reads impressive, but the demos haven't lived up to it (esp. when things like the volca sampler are so cheap and I know they are different, with the microgranny performing granular synthesis, but you know?). Second sampler question: thoughts on the SU 700?

I have always just ran a central sequencer (usually a computer), ran midi thru and used the channels to do all this stuff (mixing, switching, etc). Still want to build that midibox sequencer too. I used to have a programmable midi footcontroller that took care of a lot of these functions (tempo, program, sent a note to a synth which was connected to a ring mod, etc.).

I haven't seen a microGranny in the wild but that and the Kaleidoloop look like lots of fun even if they aren't your "typical" sampler type sampler... I use the iphone for granular sample stuff, iDensity, iPulsaret and nils are cool...

The SU700 is dope if you wanna ol school it but dat disk drive... I know kids who made some sweet hip hop on them cause they're very MPCish in workflow... I'd pick one up for cheap cause I like the style but there are more user friendly samplers that do it better, MPC 1000 with jjos... The Sp-505 and 606 are my favorite for making what I make...

I don't know why I forget about the SP-505 and 606. I've just been looking at these SU 700s go for real cheap in Japan $170 or cheaper) and I know there are coversion disk drives out there that work, and it's good to know it has a good workflow. I agree that the Kaleidoloop looks like a lot of fun (but I had a blast with two gemini rack mount dj mixers and a microphone, so what do I know?).

I sold my S-330 because of it just getting old, needing repairs, disk drive, and it was just too much (though awesomely so) "power" for me. Oh well. I hope the OP finds what they are looking for, there are a ton of great suggestions from around the "hardware sampler" spectrum. Thanks Soni.

I don't want to steer the thread too far off course but how do the granular apps compare? Have you tried Grainproc or any other options other than the aforementioned?

if u go old school w/ anything w/ a floppy, and don't want to mess w/ floppys u gotta get the HXC floppy emulator

http://hxc2001.free.fr/floppy_drive_emulator/

i know a couple ppl who use these in their SP1200 or MPC60

Nice. I only knew about the ebay "point of sale" for these. If I ever get an SU 700, this was the route I was going to go (I did a bunch of reading about it and it adds reliablility, but no performance increases, which is cool with me)

the MPX16 does. but like dude said above, i've heard a lot of iffy and bad reviews about them. AKAI!!!!!! :picard:

SU700 is cool, i liked it a lot even tho i only had it briefly. some cats swear by them.

yea the floppy emulator is a no brainer if u are gunna be saving your work at all (which not all ppl do) it beats loading like 10 floppies for 1 beat. lol
the performance increase, do u mean like loading & saving speed?

Yea, it saved like 27% off almost 3 minutes when reading a full floppy or something. The smaller the file, there was less of a difference (percent wise, I think some read/load times were like 3% faster). I should have just said "negligable" even though 27% is somewhat significant (but if I can't wait 15 seconds...).

I might pick one up and see how I like the workflow versus the mpc1000jjos.

Octatrack - NO NO NO!

That thing has to be the worst POS Elektron ever put out. And I have all their boxes...

I'd look real hard at the ES-1 Korg or if you go rack, check out the EMU ESI series.
so much gear...

^while i agree it can have a steep learning curve and rather ambiguously named functions which make it hard to understand the flow. the OT is far far from a POS.
its actually a really deep & inspired box if u are willing to tune yourself to it. theres really no other hardware out there that can touch it. its the closest thing to a hardware ableton live in a box.

if u get an OT, u gotta read Merlin's guide for it. really lays it out for u, and makes it easier to understand what the hell elektron is talking about.

I have Grainproc and it's real simple and easy to use, there are two sample you can switch between and proses live stuff... They just upgraded iDensity to 4 tracks of sampling and grain processing and it's deep but super fuckin cool... I was also doing some weird feedback sampling with rrarrow...
