Hi All,
New to the board and search was returning zippo so I figured I'd post. I'm a big fan of heavy, fuzzy, blues ... ala Black Keys, White Stripes, Radio Moscow, North Mississippi All-Stars, etc. I had a muff at one time (kicking myself for trading) and was looking to see what suggestions you had to obtain this tone? I've been looking at a lot of pedal demos but it is overwhelming at times. For classic fuzz I'm going to get a FuzzFace made by Mike from Shortscale.org. This will nail the classic Fuzz tones but what about for more modern sounding stuff? Any suggestions? I'm fine with a Muff again but was wondering if there was anything better? I've been looking at Blackout Effectors, Earthquaker Devices specifically. Thanks for the help.

Supposedly the king of "heavy blues fuzz!"
Also, look at the Jordon Bosstone. I know GGG has a kit.

Oxfuzz is a hot fuzzface.
You want that black keys thing, you ned a MkIII Tone Bender -- I head he used a Fulltone Soulbender on Thickfreakness. The EQD Tone Reaper is good too, a MkIII built by Jamie Stillman.
But Dan Auerbach has an ear for vintage fuzz for sure and you'll need ... something sputterier too -- like a Blender or a Superfuzz.

I know for certain that Jack White uses a modified big muff/with mods(flat mids and possibly some others), and a mxr micro amp. Dan Auerbach uses B:assmaster in the studio but not live. It's also rumored that Auerbach uses the green big muff, but I'd have to agree with devnulljp that the tonebender is the Black Keys' sound.
I'd try the Musket fuzz it sounds like it has lots of growling, howling, grumbling that i think would be perfect blues fuzz. Or the Fuzzhugger Algal Bloom sounds like it could do lots of tonebender types of sounds, with more versatility.

Do you think a Germanium based Fuzz Face and something like a Fulltone Soul Bender will sound too similar? I think they have very similar qualities but still have their own sound. Right now I'm thinking Germanium Fuzz Face, Superfuzz, Big Muff, and Ultimate Octave would cover most of the bases for me. Thoughts?

Check out some of the Monsterpiece stuff. The builder Richard is a super cool guy. He makes a couple of MK/Tonebender pedals, along with other tasty offerings.
Second from the bottom is the description/pricing of each pedal:

If you can find a fulltone 69 at a reasonable price and put it in front of a semi dirty amp, that is THE best heavy blues fuzz tone I've come across. I still regret trading mine every so often.

Dan collects pedals, anything you think he uses he probably owns....
live, he uses a green russian muff and a hoof fuzz... tonebender would be perfect though.
look at the MJM pedals... theyre all perfect for what you want...
