school me on delay!
So, I got a Microbrute a while ago, and while fun, I don't use it nearly enough to justify keeping it, so it's going on the chopping block . My board is currently all dirt, either strait fuzz or an octaver. I want to branch into delay and chorus..
So far I like the Disaster Transport, the Clarity(not), and the Meet Maude. I want something that can do a "normal" delay, but also get weird. Tap tempo is not necessary. The only remotely delay like pedal I've ever had was the Rainbow Machine...so, what would you get? Any other suggestions I've overlooked?

Where it's your first I'd suggest getting something with simple features that sounds good. The more straightforward it is, the better you'll know what you want when you get another delay. Hopefully at this point we've all accepted we'll always be buying and flipping pedals until we find that "perfect" pedal? And they all get weird, it's all about how you use them.
The Meet Maude and the Disaster Transport would be good ones if you've never had a delay before. The clari(not) might be kinda hard to use outside of a noise context in conjunction with other fuzzes. Tape delays are about trying to sound "good," and they can be a lot of work to maintain. Analog delays, for some reason, are about trying to sound dark and murky. Digital Delays are the best when they're not trying to be analog or tape delays, though, the Disaster Transport is pretty good for a digital delay.
Analog delays are my favorite. Malekko delays are always fun. They sound good and can get plenty weird. The memory boys are super fun too. I'd recommend picking up a used memory boy deluxe if you go that route. The modulation on them is fantastic, they have an effects loop (you can fuzz your fuzz while you fuzz), and they're relatively cheap used.
For digital delays if you want weird and useful I'd go for the Digitech Timebender. It's mindboggling what it can do.

Re: school me on delay!
For a first delay I would go digital with lotsa features. I absolutely love the Timebender and I suggest it always. It was my first delay (cept for a multi I had) and it still performs compared to other specialized (and more expensive) delays. Otherwise, something like a dd-20 could do as well. I don't think I would go Koma or seppuku for a first delay, as I tend to think of them as their own things (more noisemaker-y). Don't know if I would stretch as far as a timeline or timefactor, as they might be a bit much to wrap you head around in the beginning. A Timebender has straight forward normal delay features, with possibilities to get wierd

If you are considering the Meet Maude you should get it. It is my favourite delay and I would have saved a lot of money and time if it had have existed when I first started buying delays.

Only 1 of your analogue delays is analogue.

Re: school me on delay!
Personally, I think some of the suggestions above are pedals that might be waaaay too intimidating for your first delay pedal. But ymmv and all that.
I'd go to a music shop and try a bunch of things out, but if you cant id try something like a standard multimode digital delay (Boss, Hardwire, TC Electronic) and maybe something more on the "analogish" end, the Disaster Transport and Meet Maude would be good choices.
Also, if you haven't played your synth through a delay, you're missing out on a lot of fun

Re: school me on delay!
Yea, I'd go with something more standard before branching out.
An all-in-one box with options can be good though to point you towards more of what you might want.
The problem with most of the wacky delays is they're mediocre quite often used as a normal echo unit.
And I say this as a dude with a dozen or so delays on tap.
Ignore analog. Ignore digital. Find one, pull the trigger, and swear you'll live with it for a month before looking to flip it.

UG, where's the AD4096 suggestion?Uncle Grandfather wrote:Skychord Cloudbuster, four step sequencer on the repeats

I would actually suggest the Boss DSD-2. I think it sounds great, can be used as a "hold", rhythmic sampler with the trig in. You can also glitch the hell out of it by running a feedback loop in the trigger in (when the feedback gets strong enough, it triggers and creates random, glitchy repeats, and it also gets bleed over so that you can make it have a weird underlying modulation).
The Koma is nice and pretty straight forward. Memory Loss and Kompakt Kassette are both good, but I wouldn't rely on them as a regular delay because each has their limitations (though I do). The CB Echorec sounds nice on it's own, but it never fit well into a mix or play well with other pedals for me (though the rythmic modes are nice).
I am going to suggest the Infanem Small Echo Array.
^The best advice. I started with a DSD-2 and played the heck out of that normally then learned to make it "glitch". I think that helped when knowing what I wanted in future pedals (though I love the DSD-2 and it will always be around).rfurtkamp wrote:Yea, I'd go with something more standard before branching out.
