This is possible on the volca beats using the active step feature to turn off whatever steps youd like, but its limited to 16 step max.

Akai Rhythm Wolf is one I just saw. It has a simple bass synth and drum machine with separate outs. It's also around volca prices. Never used one though.

Volca would be great if beats and bass would be in the same unit.
The fact that you need two units is a big turn off.

I think the volcas sound better than the Rhythm Wolf. The two boxes are still smaller than the Rhythm Wolf too. But the rhythm wolf has more control routing options and has simpler/smaller versions of the volca stuff in one box (and is $100 cheaper than two volcas). I think they are both nice for the price.

I always wondered about the 307. It seems to get some flak. The times I've heard it, it sounded pretty good. Good to hear someone vouch for it.

I am pretty sure my old Kawai stuff (q80 and a drum machine could) but I am not exactly sure. Let me bust out the drum machine in the near future. However, you could just do the math in your head kinda.

MPC60 can do it: variable from 1-31 / 4, 8, 16, 32

You have to plug it into a mixer or amp, no speakers... The Jazz and Hip Hop drums with some stand up bass and some Rhodes and effects with get you a Portishead jam...

Tiny mixers are cheap. Alesis makes one that has any interface. Or just get one of those cheap headphone amps.
