Hiwatt dr103 (will it doom?)
I've been pining for one to fulfill my gilmourish fantasies and work on some trippy guitar ambient shit, but will it also doom?

I'm having deja vu all over again.

They have a kind of moderate gain Marshall sort of tone when cranked. Depending on what kind of tone you're trying to get out of it, sure. With a pedal, definitely. Though there's A LOT cheaper ways to get similar tones. I once had a Hiwatt, JCM800 and VTM120 and was able to get a similar tone out of all of them with varying levels of ease. However, the Hiwatt and the Marshall were worth the most to sell and I bought the Peavey for the cheapest, so I kept that and sold the rest. It was just a lot more work to dial in the same tones and less pretty.
Given the kinds of bands you mention frequently, I'd assume you'd need at least an overdrive with one to get a tone you wanted. Last time I recorded with my old one it had a tube screamer or SHO running into it constantly and that was even for a more straight ahead rock tone.

Damn near anything "will doom" if you put a Big Muff in front of it, but Hiwatts are fucking bright so... yeah, get one to live out your Pete Townsend fantasies (because fuck Pink Floyd) but there are cheaper and easier ways to get your sludge on...

lulz
It's just a prospect for my curiosities. I don't think I'll be able to afford anything like this in a good while.
I'm not asking if I should get it. I just want to know how flexible it is.
Eventually I'll just go full gilmour and pay 5k plus for his actual guitar.

Thank you for the detailed information.
My interest in it isn't as much of me thinking I require a certain amp to get the tone I want. I've converted to pedal based rigs.
I know that now, thanks to most of you.
I just get really hard when I watch the Live at Pompeii vhs I have and see that David Gilmour is running 3 Hiwatt dr103s.

Re: Hiwatt dr103 (will it doom?)
Honestly though, they do just great for doom / sludge stuff. Its an amp that doesn't flub out or lose anything when you crank it, and while it may be naturally bright its got waaaayyyy more than enough low end. I have a really good friend (and super tone aficionado) who rocks one live even though hes got a plethora of "better for doom amps" because it just cuts through a live mix like nothing, and live he sounds fucking amazeballs.
Plus if they are good enough to steal Stephen O'Malley away from Sunn Model T's they must be badass...

If you're getting your heavy dirt from pedals and you've got the money, Hiwatts are pretty great for making loud noises.

Also anyone who doesn't like Pink Floyd is legitimately a terrible person and probably endorses undiscerning praise of amateur genital mutilation.
