Moar rack: I think the Digitech IPS-33B was about 1990, just on the outer edge of the period marked as vintage in the first post. Has two part intelligent or chromatic harmony, Whammy, Shimmer, a Space Station-y String Synth patch, arpeggiators, and more bread and butter delay and modulation. You can usually get them for under $200, which seems to be favorable compared to what OG Whammys cost.

Re: Digital "vintage"
Skip the PDS. They're overvalued, get the RDS rackmount. You get headroom and routing options and actual control yet it still goes freaky.
ART SGE/SGX (the editable ones, not the preset only, have to be careful).
Boss ME-10 for the last analog/digital hybrid with an actual effects loop but *Everything* is MIDI controllable. Want to switch analog distortion types mid-note and have it sputter? Sure. It doesn't stop you.
Boss ME-6B - the synth filters alone are worth the price of admission.
Not a fan of the FX90etc from DOD - they were noisy, nasty doorstops when new in every one I ever tried, I do NOT get the allure.

Re: Digital "vintage"
Is this a common debate? ICs don't necessarily equate with digital. BBD delays, or at least the BBD-specific aspects, are analog.ramonovski wrote:Well...that thing again... And some russian(?) pedals I've seen on ebay which name can't remember... Definitely some history in those USSR-based pedals.
As for the rack, pretty much all Eventide stuff from the 70s/80s

Technically, BBDs are digital in their operation in some regards, but we still call them analog and most people would, I think that's more of a purists debate.
There was an old rack chorus unit (Roland I think?) called a digital chorus but used a BBD funnily enough.

Hmm. I guess I have more reading to do. Is this because of the use of clock pulsing? Like, they're digital in the way they manage time?Scruffie wrote:Technically, BBDs are digital in their operation in some regards, but we still call them analog and most people would, I think that's more of a purists debate.

Re: Digital "vintage"
Aren't BBDs not 'analog' because they're discrete-time devices, but not 'digital' because they're not discrete-amplitude devices?
I feel like putting a BBD delay in the same category as either a DSP delay or a tape delay just for the sake of convenience is a bit unnecessary. They're entirely their own thing.
If you look in the service manual of a Boss DM-1, DM-2 and a lot of similar pedals there's actually no mention of 'analog' anywhere. People mostly started misusing it more recently.

Re: Digital "vintage"
Can't find much demos on these, but they do seem to be cheap locally (around 50 euros/dollars for an SGE Mach II is pretty common). Would you advise picking one of these up for that price? What do you like most about them?rfurtkamp wrote: ART SGE/SGX (the editable ones, not the preset only, have to be careful).

Re: Digital "vintage"
Very ugly digital distortion/primitive verb/pitch shifting.
They're all over the early NIN and 90s Ministry stuff.
There's a factory preset, "Downward Spiral" .....long before the album came out.

Be aware that it's not a must have unit, I'd tell you right up front that a Quadraverb (then get at + EPROM and install it for $15) is a far, far more capable unit.
It's just one that's overlooked and in my desert island pile of oddities.

Didn't know I'd be opening somesort of can o' worms with that analog vs digital comment
I just genuinly assumed we all thought of BBD's as analog. As far as know of all bbd peds are marketed that way, whatever that's worth. I'm clearny too ignorant when it comes to the technology behind it, which is why I don't really have an opinion on the subject, not because I'm a purist

I think we all do think of the BBD as analog, save Ramonovski, who equates analog to the presence of tape.

Analog isn't the presence of tape, that's tape delay!

Thanks! Definitely sounds interesting, especially the ugly distortion and pitch shifting stuff sounds right up my alley. I was already on the lookout for a Quadraverb, so I'll probably better try and handle that first! Maybe I'll pick up an SGE if I find one for a real steal in the meantime. The Quadraverbs are a little harder to come by for good prices over here it seems.rfurtkamp wrote:Be aware that it's not a must have unit, I'd tell you right up front that a Quadraverb (then get at + EPROM and install it for $15) is a far, far more capable unit.

Re: Digital "vintage"
Is a BBD IC-based delay "more" analog than a magnetic tape based?
