Filter = stone deaf? Is it sweet?D.o.S. wrote:As far as actual pedal boarding is concerned, I think I have, uh, four pedals in my chain, counting a tuner, and two of those are always on OD and filter, so I basically just have a Big Muff flavor to turn on and off. That's the live-band, playing with other people setup.
The fun pedals go toward creating sounds to be manipulated later for the headphones-y stuff.

Dope. I have the idea of eventually getting a modular bass rig together and im contemplating a preamp pedal + stone deaf for the base sound(s).

Hm. I don't know how it would sound running into, like, a Tech 21 or whatever, but it's definitely a great tone shaping device.kbithecrowing wrote:Dope. I have the idea of eventually getting a modular bass rig together and im contemplating a preamp pedal + stone deaf for the base sound(s).

Re: i downsized my board and it's been the best
Isn't that PDF thing more midrange based?
I quite dig the DBA Kill Kill Filter as a bass tone shaper.
As for pedalboards I think I won't go below 6 pedals, 6 - 11 pedals is probably the golden ratio for me:
2 - 3 dirt pedals, 1 - 2 modulation pedals, delay, volume pedal, octaver, weird pedal, filter, tuner

Sort of -- the range is from 65k to 3khz, but that's where a large majority of the sonic architecture for a bass guitar takes place in a "normal" (i.e. standardish rock instrumentation) context.

I think I'm like this as well. 3 dirts are a must for me right now, because a big part of my distorted bass is the dynamic changes (our music is sometimes based on those heavily). So it's not just three different sounds but also three levels.Tristan wrote:As for pedalboards I think I won't go below 6 pedals, 6 - 11 pedals is probably the golden ratio for me:

If I needed to downsize, there is a number of pedals I don't use to their full potential or that I only use once or twice per set. Sort of "niche" sounds in our music. But maaan I don't need to and I think some might come handy in recording or writing sessions (those are coming soon, so I'll see if I'm right)
confession: I should probably really get rid of my CT5 but I'm too afraid I'll never get it again/never find anything like it

Re: i downsized my board and it's been the best
Glad this thread was here.
I just decided to do this myself. Going from an 11 pedal board to a 5 pedal board. PT-2 to PT-Mini
New chain will be Diamond Comp->Mini->Buzzz->Wilson Freaker->Disaster Transport->Tuner, with some kind of guest panel, mini patch bay thing for throwing in various pedals whenever

Keep it for when you go back to guitar.
Right now I'm at 8 + tuner and will eventually go back up to 11 + tuner. More than that in a chain would probably be too distracting for me too. I like looking at the Leviathan boards that come ashore every so often in the SYB thread but I would not use something that big. I'm essentially a live player, that's what I like, even if it's not often enough in front of people. I don't enjoy to sit at home and twiddle the knobs. So if I like the sound in a band context and it's useful in a set and forget constellation (yep, I do that) it might stay on the board. Liking the sound in a band context also encompasses being able to tell a difference, hence the alarming lack of dirt on my board.
I don't up- or downsize much, it's basically always been in this ballpark. Maybe I should hook up all my pedals for shits and giggles and see if that makes me any happier.

Re: i downsized my board and it's been the best
it's not about me playing bass man
my point is pretty much the same as yours - i'm a live player, all about the band context. CT5 doesn't fit in for me, except looping a drone with it from time to time. I've been experimenting with the octave/5th quantization and I think it's super useful for making really musical background textures. But that (and perhaps an occasional reverse delay, not even an octave up one) is the only use I have for it. So i'm extremely on-the-fence about it

Re: i downsized my board and it's been the best
I'm not surprised when one of yall freaks out and flips everything to downsize anymore, the weirder thing to me (and especially on ILF) is the amount of people who are live or die by a preset number and configuration of pedals... When did the "board" start to dictate your style or ability or genre or whatever??? Everyone needs to take a deep breath and a step back and just throw your pedals all over the floor Chank style and just plug in stuff and play... We've gotten to the point where we are buying or not buying pedlols based on the power or cable jack locations and we're harassing the builders who came up with this stuff to form their ip to our current whims of fancy without considering the most important thing which is how they sound... Back in the day when guitar wankers started to become rawk gods and started getting paid as such they started to look at their tools and think up ways to better this or outdo so and so and with the small group of mfgrs at the time what we ended up with was Cornish who decided to take their millions an make huge ugly buffers and phase faces in one box so the rawk gods could work their magic... Custom pedals were means to and end not a right of birth but we've forgotten that... Whatever...
Tldr: throw your pedals away...
