I'm looking to add a neck pickup to my melody maker sg. It's one of those 2011 ones that pop up around 300 every so often. Right now the bridge is a dimarzio dominion, not because I love lamb of god, but because the way the guy describes it in a video was perfect. I enjoy it a lot. It seems thick and warm, but still somewhat articulate. Single coil mode is nice too. Sorry for the generic description. Just setting the stage.
I'd like the neck pickup to be totally different. Right now I'm looking at p90s, jazzmaster pickups, and mini humbuckers. I want it to be smoother and richer (the nature of any neck pickup, right?) and preferably a little more high mids or treble. The bridge pickup is pretty low mid heavy. Id like this pickup to be pretty when clean, but potentially still have some grit. Not a real clean machine. Then when I hit it with fuzz id love to be in warm, thick, feedback heaven.
I don't really care if it comes in a Humbucker size/shape. There will be routing involved regardless and I like the mismatched wierd. Makes me feel at home. Right now I'm leaning to some sort of hot p90. Any advice? Stuff to look at? I've never played guitars with any of these pickup types, let alone aftermarket upgrade ones.

you need a Nelson Instruments superchief. Warm, smooth, clean, heavy, dirty - it does it all, it's surface mounted, it pairs well with everything, and Bobby's selling seconds off for cheap right now. I have one in the neck position of my mustang and it's perfect for any situation I've used it in so far.

I cannot recommend the Fralin stuff enough. Not sure what your price range is, but those pups completely change your guitar.

I dig the Mean90 in my SGHH - the only GFS I've ever liked. That said, I'd check out the Nelson blem/bstock stuff in the BST

I plan to pick up one of those Nelson guys. That's good looking out! Will report back with info once it's installed

for completely different, can't go wrong with an X2N. Of course in the neck to be able to pair with the dominioin it'd need to always be coil tapped or out of phase or whatever else wiring shenanigans can make a humbucker sound puny. But the X2N's voltage-enough-to-power-a-blender counters that.
