Multi-effects

Post by Clockworker »

What multi-effects do you guys use? I was looking at some of the stuff from Zoom, particularly the G5 (because I just fucking love bells and whistles out the ass) and the MS-70CDR (because of course I want to put 5 rotary pedals in a row, if possible).

I know there are many others, though, and seeing as how I'm still poor, I want more options to think about for a while.

Oh, yeah, that's on my list too, but I'm talking about the stuff I mentioned in the OP. Those big units that simulate lots of different famous pedals. I know that the obvious answer is "Get the originals", but I'm still curious.

The current crop of Zoom is pretty good. Mostly better than the Line6.

I had the Zoom G5 and currently have the G3. Those units are extremely good and just stoopid when you consider the price. The modulations stand out in particular, along with many of the more unique effects like the step filter. The fuzz and distortions are surprisingly good as well. One of the things that I think gets overlooked with multi FX units is the user interface, and that is something that the Zoom units excel at. A dedicated screen for each effect along with three knobs per screen makes the unit really hands on and wayyy more fun and gratifying to use than the Boss and Line6 units.

I've got the Zoom 70CDR and also a G1on. I'd definitely recommend both devices. However, the MS 100BT is probably the best option in the range overall as it gives you access to essentially their entire catalogue of algorithms (additional costs apply for some of the effects).

Zoom MS70CDR delivers.
Magicstomp is another one I decided to keep as well.

If you can deal with the computer connection to maximize the editing, the Magicstomp really keeps holding its own. If you've exhausted the possibilities of the eight-tap delay you probably don't have anything else going on in your life.

I've got the MS-100BT and the 70CDR sounds that you can get for it in the app (many for free) are pretty damned awesome--the Particle Verb and Ice Delay are standouts of the free ones.

Zoom MS-70CDR. Lots of good sounds in a Boss-sized pedal for cheap. Briefly thought about getting a used G3X for $100, but it went before I made up my mind.

I had the MS70-CDR for a while and it sounds pretty good, but the user interface and the limitation of having a single footswitch makes is very impractical for my needs. If I was going the Zoom route I'd probably get the G3.

I'm still running a Line 6 M9 in my pedalboard rig to provide modulation delay and reverb along with the occasional drive, or filter model.

I used to run one of those gigantic Tonelabs back before I knew much about effects, I effectively traded it for a Goatkeeper as soon as I got schooled. Absolutely no regrets, but sometimes I do wish I still had that giant hulking, dead cold sounding machine so I can put all of the effects at full blast.
