Nice demos and collection you've got there! The octane 3 sounded really fat, I'd never heard much about that before but damn!

Re: ✤ Old rusty fuzz demos : 1968 Montarbo Sinphoton fuzz ✤
am looking forward to that quintuple-header show-down. don't worry about not playing perfectly. the more pedals you have the less you need to be able to play, in the technique sense. sometimes i play guitar like a synth; the guitar is just a signal generator and the real work takes place messing around with the knobs and switches on the stomps.gaussgunn wrote:We are thinking the same way, cuz I got even a bit more crazier idea - I`m gonna make a shoot out of 5 vintage fy-6 units, these 4 I got and one is coming. the red and apollo a currently broken by previous owners, thats the reason I got the cheap, gonna fix them soon.
I can make shootout between that two pedals, but later , ok? I`m still learning playing guitar lol, gotta improve my skills and learn new tunes.
About standard fuzz : it got less gain that SF, both settings sound more compressed, octave up sound is brighter and on the full range setting it sounds almost similar to octavia type pedals. To me it`s less cool than SF
good to hear your opinion on the differences between the superfuzz and the standard fuzz.
i've just modded out my superfuzz clone with a 4 position germanium/silicon diode selector (3 pairs germanium and 1418s for a bright option), a three-position tone switch, tone 1/2 plus scoop trim-pot option on third, and a weird octave biasing trimmer on a switch that gives me a sweet spot inbetween octave/no octave. the final thing would have been adding a daughter board with a switchable standard fuzz front end on so i could switch between superfuzz and standard fuzz.
http://www.fredric.co.uk/misc/superfuzz ... _diffs.gif
but if the standard is just cleaner octavey then i have a few things that cover that already (foxx tone clone, ampeg scrambler clone, fender blender clone). so your review just saved me a mission.
anyway, old rusty fuzzes best. will check in here regularly.
btw, i like that maestro. have heard others that just sound a bit flat and tinny. like the way the bass strings fuzz out but the top strings stay relatively clean. opens up options that all-or-nothing fuzzes (superfuzz for example) don't.

Your Superfuzz is nearly as beat up as mine:
I just went in to replace the tone switch.... and give it massive knobs.

Comparing my guts to yours, there's no octave trimpot, just a resistor there, and one of the thin green caps could be different (just looks longer, could be a similar value)

nice superfuzz, dub. those enclosures are so cool. love the huge rubber stomp. as big and brutal and no-nonsense as the sound it makes. can you read the transistor type? does it sound good? the electros look unusually clean and new. though after forty years they would probably be overdue being replaced if they were original anyway. use and abuse. thanks for the pics.dub wrote:Your Superfuzz is nearly as beat up as mine:

The transistors read "537E", the caps are the originals, I wonder if they have faded to grey from blue like Gauss's? aha.
It sounds pretty close to his demo, like the end of the world. I've had a few clones and I've got a Standard Fuzz (the wah version) for comparison too. But this one just kills.

Re: ✤ Old rusty fuzz demos : 1996 Kendrick Buffalo Phuz ✤
Sorry for the long delay , mates!
monkeydancer, tnx dude, if you can get it for cheap - you should try it
tabbycat, glad to hear that my experience is a bit useful for you. I`m absolute noob about soldering and modding, so I can`t even imagine what your mod does. But if you need an idea how to stack SF , here`s it - my most favorite doom setup is super fuzz into green russian big muff, they stack perfectly ( nothing can overload green BM ). It works as a fat low freq boost and extra gain boost.
dub, your superfuzz is definitely older than mine. Cuz that trimpot appeared on later pedals. Btw my red-blue SF got absolutely the same grey caps
p.s. Grey super fuzz got perfect doom look. that big knobs suit perfectly
So for today we got 1996 Kendrick Amplifiers Buffalo Phuz .

hit it for more pics:

So basically it`s a muddy boost + muddy overdrive. Nothing great about it. To be honest it sounds a bit crappy and along with my crappy playing it is double crap combo , don`t watch my demo

that seems like something that could be used for a cool sounding overdub occasionally, but definitely not as a main fuzz sound.

I dunno, it depends on the type of music you play. I could definately see myself using that as a main dirt sound. But I love lo-fi dirt tones.voerking wrote:that seems like something that could be used for a cool sounding overdub occasionally, but definitely not as a main fuzz sound.

Re: ✤ Old rusty fuzz demos : 1996 Kendrick Buffalo Phuz ✤
voerking , I wouldn`t use it even for that , lol
KaosCill8r , I love lo-fi stuff too, cheers mate! But this phuz got serious lack of gain, that makes me sad
Btw if you`re into lofi fuzz - you gotta check out modern reissue sam ash fuzzboxxx , costs only 80 bucks, but got awesome vintage look and sounds really sweet in lofi way ( I mean freq range and texture). I got it and gonna demo it soon.
So for today we got Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz ( autograph series ) from mid 1980s

hit it for more pics:

Definitely crazy stuff, first of all it`s a motherfather SPACESHIP, then - it got ENORMOUS volume range. Dimed volume overloads my superreverb preamp tubes so it sounds extra gainy with some random oomph sounds. With humbuckers it sounds great and ultra FAT. With single coils dimed volume sounds to crazy for me - high freqs are clipping, too much hum. Anyway I love it, seriously .

The Axis fuzz is is awesome. I built a Axis clone. So much fuzzy texture in that one. Very crunchy.

early 1970s Foxx Tone Machine

hit it for gut shot:

It looks better than sounds
To my ears it sounds a bit trebly and harsh. Can`t play it for long cuz my ears start to bleed. It sound better if you roll off the tone and dime bass on your amp, but it`s not cool

Very cool toy to play powerchords , gated , but when it sustains for a short time it sounds fat'n'beefy. Monster knob rules

1970s Roland Space Echo RE-201 oh my

I don`t own it but had the chance to see it
Awesome thing as a traditional echo and as strange-noise-weird-sounds-n-oscillations-machine too. Different modes got different rhythmic patterns, but they are a bit quiet. I`ll cut and post clip with knob tweaking and crazy stuff later
As you can notice - the playing is good, obviously cuz that`s not me playing
sorry for cam mic
