Bass amps for guitars

Post by agiant »

I've seen a lot of pics here (show your stuff threads) with guitars through bass amps (sunn, ampeg, etc.).
Tell me more, I am confused

When I did it it was because they were cheaper than guitar amps were.

That's changed in the last 15 years or so.

I might be totally wrong here...But isn't it mostly old tube driven bass heads that are popular for guitar nowadays? Lots of Marshalls and Fenders were originally designed for bass guitar, but don't really work that great for most current age styles of guitar music, which usually rather go for 600watt solid state bass rigs (GK, Ampeg, Ashdown, etc).

The Traynor YBA-1 for example, seems grocely underpowered for bass, cause I rypically prefer my bass tone loud, punchy and clean.
But it just so happens to work great for guitar, especially if you don't mind a little extra low end oomph.

No idea why anyone would want to play guitar through a solid state bass amp though :idk:
Except maybe if you're depending on somekind of modeling pedal or whatever, and want a live/rehearsel rig that kinda acts like a small PA :idk:

I first read the thread title as "Best Amp for Guitars", which I thought was going to be an hilarious satire of the age old "best x for y" conundrum.

No lols ensued.

Disappointment resides here.

Loud, clean, and cheap, and if you get your stuff through pedals, works just fine.

The trifecta there including cheap, if cost is a huge object - which it was when I was younger. Ironically even used SS bass amps then were expensive and the tube ones were cheap, but that was a time when you couldn't reliably get tubes for the Ampegs etc.

I have owned several tnts, a tko and a 300. They have a great watt to cost ratio and more headroom than any guitarist would need. If you are after sparkly bright tones for poppy jazz or some shit, then naturally you would look elsewhere. However, for dirty fuzz and and booming thunder it is the best bargain available. Honestly the old TKO at my drummers place is one of my favorite amps to play through... it still reaks of cigarettes, but only costs $200. PVKLT!

All my amps are technically "bass amps" but I use them on guitar because they sound rad. Headroom, volume, warmth, and they were cheaper than Marshall Superleads and shit.

GK 800RB fucking RULES for guitar. Use the crossover and pair it with a 1x15 and a 2x12, oh maaaaan. Wish I hadn't killed mine by experimenting with rewiring the crossover.

I just got a new Fender Rumble 200 for bass. I'm way into it on guitar, too. Loud, Fendery, no tubes.
