Should I buy a Megalith? Built a clone! It's awesome!!!

Post by KaosCill8r »

I want a good Muff style pedal for guitar and bass. Would a megalith do this for me? I know it does heavy bottom end, but can it get nice top end sounds for solos with note clarity? I have checked out the demos but they all seem like they are showing the heavy low tones.

Yeah, I do believe I could achieve "note clarity" when I had a Megalith. However, I did not find it particularly muff-like, despite whatever similarities the circuit may hold.

Also, yes, buy one.

dude, a megalith is absolute destruction. it can definitely hang with solos. if you want amp sizzling frequencies to accompany the 'clarity' YES GET A MEGALITH! better yet, ask dan to build you one :joy: honestly my favorite dirt pedal. doesn't really sound like a muff to me, though. more like an amp melting monster. packs quite a punch. but really I don't know how 'clean' it can get? no matter what settings I use it sounds like my speakers are burning
i'm glad i can call you a friend. even if i'll never see you again

I made a really shitty layout that i build mine from and could share but might be too hard to to explain. I was thinking that I wanted to do a tighter layout for this one, though.
I found a kit to build one, so I will build that. There is a build doc on Tagboard fx but I have bad luck building on vero, but my success rate building kits is 99.9%. Built at least 20+ kits, all dirt and fuzz and a couple of buffers. Only had one that didn't quite work properly. It worked but sounded not like it should of.
Thanks LaoWiz for the offer of transistors too. Very cool of you but the kit comes with the required trannies. Though I might get you to build me something one day. Your builds are real popular around here. thumb:

Or build one, if you follow the power filtering tips and socket transistors so you can chase out excess instability.

It isn't a Muff, no, but it can fill a bunch of the same territory. I find it feels more dynamic and touch sensitive than a Muff, which makes it work better for me. (Then again, I haven't done the deep muff dive into all the circuit variants.) I need to build another to keep.

Yeah I just played mine for awhile and it definitely keeps the heavy but with the filter set right it's got great highs... Not a muff at all really and can kinda get synthy if you nail the input... I use it with the low wide open and use the Maor Heavy sparingly but yes GET ONE...

You will love the Megalith if you love fuzz. It's the hugest meaty textural sound. Just balls out...

Thanks for all your feedback dudes. I've ordered a Megalith clone kit as well as a Ampeg Scrambler fuzz kit. Next week will be a very fuzzy fun week. :yay: My pedal kit gas is getting out of control. :picard:

I built the Megalith clone and this thing is awesome. How it sounds compared to the production Megalith, I can not say. But this clone rocks. Very heavy fuzz, a lot of tweaking capability, low noise floor when I'm not playing. :yay: Only had a few minutes with it so far. Haven't tried it on bass yet but it sounds great on guitar. Looking forward to running the bass through it. Thanks for all the feedback dudes. :thumb:

I noticed that on the one I built once I chased out the squealing gremlins, but I've never tried the real deal. It was very noticeable how well it behaved there.

Yeah that is the one. Don't eye it any longer. Buy it. I have built over 20 of hit kits and they are awesome. Will be starting on one of his Scrambler fuzzes later on tonight.

Did you try Lee's Brassmaster? That thing is crazy on bass. Nasty fuzz with ALL of your bass tone coming through. Mahoosive wall of sound.
