Cheap dirt peds for crushing/grinding sludge noise?

What about the usual suspects, like the digitech death metal, HM-2,...?

Cheap high gain dirt peds like those obviously work superb for black metal or whatever, but I kinda hate the lack of real low end. I'm not after just any fizzy lo-fi tone, I'd like to avoid anything that sounds remotely 'bees in a jar' -like.

So what about the Boss ODB-2? Nano pocket metel muff? Bass muff? Or anything similar out there that's bassy, sludge worthy and stupîd cheap?

I really love the HM-2, it has punch, it sounds heavy and it has a powerful eq.
If you don't max out the eq you can get some really punchy and heavy sounds that work well with palm muting, it's a pretty tight and big sounding distortion, the fizzy lofi bees in a jar sound is just optional.
Digitech / DOD Death Metal and Corrosion are supposed to be great as well but I haven't tried them myself.

I really like OCD, DOD250 and Dist+ variants lately. Boss ODB-3 was a fun sound when I had one. The Ibanez FZ-7 always seemed pretty interesting too.

If you can find a Denio Metal Rocker jump on that shit. It's kind of similar to the HM-2, harder to find but way cheaper and good enough quality to not get destroyed on a board.
I had a DOD Corrosion and it has absolutely enormous low end but the high end always seemed either muffled or tinny so i didn't like it much on guitar, better for tabletop noise and stuff. The Denio is the only one i thought had a real nice full-frequency-range kinda heavy, plenty of low end but not JUST low end.
Some of the Behringer peds like the Ultra Metal and stuff can be pretty good for that kinda stuff. They tend to have a really high noise floor but sometimes that's a good thing
The Ibanez FZ-7 is a cool pedal but it doesn't get thaaaat heavy. It does nice tame fuzz sounds and cool broken radio sounds but I wouldn't call it 'sludgy'. Still worth a look.

The thing with hm-2s is that the Taiwan version has a lot less low, and a screechier high end. To get that grindy sound you need mij or a decent clone.
Digitech or dod death metal are fucking awesome. No shortage of lows there. And if you don't like it, which is impossible, you can mod it for a gain pot and some different clipping diodes and get a really versatile pedal.

There's a couple ones that've been mensioned that I never even heard of or bother to take a closer look at, and a bunch of classics I've wanted to give a try since FOREVER. The OCD: Had the Mooer clone for a couple days, but I quickly flipped it cause someone made me an offer I just couldn't refuse. Even before I tried it out on my 'loud' rig, or with my other dirt pedals

Distortion+ : When I was a kid, and the internet started to get more than a couple of pages, I read somewhere that my childhood heroes Hüsker Dü and Fugazi used this pedlol...So the expectations grew to gigantic epic levels, which is why I decided there's no way the distortion+ would NOT dissapoint me if I'd finally get one. I'm passed that now though, I outgrew all those illusions I guess Still, it's not hugely gainy or bassy, is it? If a good deal passes my way, I'll grab it and find out for myself.

And another old dod that I think hasn't been mensioned yet: FX56. Supposed to be a HM-2 clone, right?

Checked a couple FZ-7 clips, and though it's probably underrated and aweseome in it's own right, for the kind of sounds I have in mind, I'd personally rather look for an HM-2 or ODB-3 instead. Apparanntly King Buzzo swears by the ODB-3, that's got to count for something, right?
Pretty ironic that, according to this interview I read, he seems to hate the DOD buzz box, wich was supposedly created with the melvins in mind

The stock Distortion + is not all that bassy, but you can very easily mod it for whatever you want, basically. That's kind of the key to the pedal. The Buzz Box is a Grunge + Blue Box, I think -- you could also investigate a Grunge.

I just sold off a half dozen cheap dirtboxes, and the Marshall Guvnor Plus was the keeper of all my sub $75 OD-distortion pedals. Two bands of low eq brings the bass, stacks great, tight enough for grind-speed. I keep meaning to mod mine for better clipping and bass, but like it every time I use it. No problem getting Coffins death doom tones with it, tho I think they use the ODB-3? Prefer the Monarch, but only just, and the Marshall is 33-50% the price.

I loves my Taiwan HM2.

Or just get an Ampeg or Crate or Randall solid state amp for the price of two or three cheap pedals / one ILF pedal. Pretty much the uber reliable sludge grind amps of choice for that reason.

Fab tone: Another one I probably knew existed, but never gave a close look for whatever reason. As usual, I started by checking as many youtube demos as I could find. And the price:awesome ratio in this one seems pretty fucking ridicilously good. I wouldn't be surprised if I end up liking it just as much as pricier OCD type of overdrives. The chances of finding one the shitty local used market will be slim though :s

A buddy of mine had a Guvnor Plus for a while. I don't actually remember what it sounded like, but I do remember being really impressed with the sounds he got from that pedlol, considering the pocket change he payed for it.
