Re: ILOVEDRUMS... It Begins.
Is it less doom of me to admit that 22x20 kick drums are perfect in my opinion? I've used that size for over 10+ years now and love it. I'll take 10 & 12" toms for pretty much everything else. For rock/doom i'll use 13" or 14" rack and 16 or 18" floor toms.
That's really i'd ever need. Shallow kick drums never really did it for me.

Some super large bass drums sound like you are in an industrial garage, and someone is throwing shoes at an aluminum garage door. I am not saying that a 18-20" deep, larger size bass drum will sound horrible, but it can get a little wild. That, and deep bass drums take up a fair amount of stage space. Even though my Ludwig bass drum is a bigger drum, it is shallower than all my previous 16" depth Tama bass drums, making it slightly more accommodating when setting up.
I've found that as diameter increases depth needs to decrease to keep response similar. It's a cylinder of air so if you make it wider it needs to be not as long to keep the volume the same. If you start getting into really deep really big drums the response from the kick is going to go down. So if you play really really slow and don't do intricate foot work it can sound fucking huge, but try to play fast and it becomes mud real quick. But strangely I've found that the response from my 26x14 is freaking insane, the shallower depth helps with rebound and precision, so while it might not have the most sustain the trade off for more punch is very much welcome.
I've gotta agree that I'm really starting to dig the shallower kick drum when it comes to stage space, its saved my butt a couple times now from playing in really uncomfortable positions.

Not at all!!! I see tons and tons of doom bands playing with 22's. I still have a Gretsch club mod 22x20 kick that I refinished in matte black that I keep around for the bluegrass / doomgrass / hellybilly / doombilly whatever you wanna call it band that I will eventually form. There's just something magical about that size for 22's. I hate shallow 22's but deep 22's are freaking awesome since you get the punch but the deepness helps with sustain and perceiving a lower fundamental (when its really just accentuating the first or second harmonic more which due to frequency is perceived as lower than it really is). I concur with the tom sizes as well, if I was playing something fast or non-doom I'd use the classic 12/16 tom setup but I've fallen in love with the 14/18 setup. More balls, less pop.

Since I'm generally looking for a drummer to play with, rather than playing myself, I'll definitely say that I do not give two shits about the size of the kit. Although if someone comes in with a Neil Peart-looking kit, I'm gonna want to know that they're not a wanker before I trust them with it. But most drummers are just looking for a decent band and they're gonna keep the kit they have.

Nope. You like what you like, and can never be wrong for that. In fact,an interesting way to look at it might be to play the other end of the tonal spectrum. For instance, lets say everyone is tuned to C or A, or another letter, if you have super low tuned drums, you might just get lost in the sauce. But if you have your own sonic space, what you play may be able to be heard a lot more clearly. (Converge) I have seen some people rock even less than 22" bass drums with authority. I can say that I can hear my drums better than ever before with my current configuration, so I am not complaining. Nor do I think that everyone needs to do the same thing.
At the end of the day, we do what we do, because we love what we do. Take my special drums away, and I would find SOMETHING to tap on!

Your on the right path my friend.
As far as crashes buy what ever cheap big cymbals you can find (20"+). If you hit them hard enough they're all crashes.

Re: ILOVEDRUMS... It Begins.
agree with skip. all my crash cymbals(I have 5) aside from 1 are all rides. They hold up much more and like skip said... hit em hard enough and they are crashes.

its worth spending a little more to get cast cymbals over sheet. With rude hats and a reverend ride, a cheap cymbal will really stand out as sounding shittier than the others.

Yeah some of sheet cymbals are very shitty. But there are some good pressed sheet cymbals to be found. I couldn't afford to buy decent cast and ended up buying a set of UFIP M8 series. 14" Hi-Hats, 16" Crash Cymbal, 20" Ride Cymbal, Nylon Cymbal carry bag. Also got a good deal on an extra 18" crash. These things are very heavy and solid for a good price. Nice full and dark sounding. Very good for the doom. Been hitting them hard for about 4 years now. No dints, buckles or cracks. Also worth it if you have some good cast cymbals and just want a second set for different sounds.

Re: ILOVEDRUMS... It Begins.
ive heard the ride and hats in person and loved the way they sound hit fucking hard....
a few cymbals a year isn't going to put me in the poor house, so Im not terribly worried about it. I have heard cast cymbals but none of them spoke to me, and with so many choices, if it doesn't speak to me im not buying. no matter what the price is.
