Teach me to auto wah.

Post by greeny23 »

I've got a Boss TW1 and a Guyatone WR2 inbound that i'm thinking of keeping for myself (cause we all know that i flip stuff so don't think you're a detective) but i don't really know how to get 100% good sounds out of them. I love the theory of not needing a treadle to get quack.

Who uses them other than Guthrie? Point me in the right direction!

I use a bunch of different ones, Groove Regulator/Used a source audio this weekend/and keep my Weeping Demon set up that way a ton.

The thing I don't love is you can't always get that notched sound of a real wah.
but if you play with the attack and decay enough and mess with the sensitivity you can get good control over them.

Guyatone only has the two controls but even with that I bet you can get a ton of good sounds.

The nice thing is that your picking dynamics can have a huge impact on the pedal. So you can almost get as much control as a regular wah just by the way you pic and play (leaves em more sensitive to placement in your chain tho)

I can think of heaps of envelope filter players. Is there really that much difference between an envelope filter and an auto wah? I always just kind of thought an envelope filter had an input that was touch sensitive/sensitive to your picking dynamics whereas an auto wah had a fixed/adjustable rate or sweep or whatever.
I dunno.

Ya, If it has a sensitivity control you're golden. Low sensitivity can give you some subtle filtered sounds, and higher gets dat quack. Granted I'm using a xerograph dlx, but it does some cool shit, although it is picky about board placement as mentioned. I like how it has a fast/slow switch. It would be much harder to use without it.

I usually set envelope filters so that normal picking stays in the dark, vocal portion of the sweep, and where I have to pick hard as shit to get the quack. Which I generally dislike. Edit: I like the way I set things up. I generally dislike higher pitched quacky filters.

Star A.D. by FNM has some good envelope filtered guitar iirc.
