Re: Crystal/Singing bowls
You know, soni I actually thought you'd be the guru on this topic.
I was going to start with some cheaper metal singing bowls to muck around with. Just wanted to know if anyone had a set and if there was particular type/make to get/avoid.
On the subject of the crystal bowls, although I'm not really ready to invest in any yet, are they all the same or are there variations? I get the impression that there are cheapo ones that hippie stores mark up and then there are legit versions as well.

I've had good luck with cognac glasses, and since you can usually get more water in them than a wine glass you can really bring teh lowz.sonidero wrote:Start with some wine glasses from the bargin store and work your way up???

This is good timing, pope. I am also starting to look into getting some good singing bowls. I am guessing since they have a new age association, it is really easy to overpay though.

I don't have one at the moment but I've had several small to medium metal bowls before... You should be able to find some online for $20-$50 if you wanna have a go at the ohm...
Also this is close by my house, I'll get pics this week...

Lots of good sound files there and you can actually hear the differences.
Here is recording done with sony pcm - no fx of only 3 tibetan bowls...
https://youtu.be/ay38kMu8DP4
in short...
metal - lightweight, complex harmonic structure but volume is not intense.
crystal - heavy and fragile, sine wave single frequency but loud and can be intense.
Complex harmonies can be gotten with either but it takes more crystal to reach the complexity of the metal bowls. That being said if you have two or three very loud sine waves it can create some pretty intense beating effect. In the end if you are thinking singing bowls you might also want to consider gongs. Two or more larger ..24" or so gongs can really be intense and harmonically complex. For gongs check with gongs unlimited they are the ones. Gongs will come out cheaper if you really are serious.

I've got one small metal one I bought in nepal as a souvenir, I love the droney sound. Getting loads of them so you can make music sounds fun.

Re: Crystal/Singing bowls
I'm sure there's a way.
Just a cool sound to compliment the heavies (was what I had in mind) or for doing quiet bits before I do loud bits.
Maybe there's a crystal boner for you, jwar?

Contact mics? You can put those on anything. Hell, if I had a singing bowl I'd try it out.jwar wrote:Can you fuzz a singing bowl?
