Oh nice, I thought it was coming out on record store day...but that's built to spill. Need to stop by the local record shop, thanks for the heads up

Ugh. I really wanted to like it - it took serious effort just to get through it. And I did try... but..
NOPE.
Just...
yeah... no.
I'm a rabid MoMo fanboy, for the early records... but his Ugly Casanova record is the last thing Isaac has done, that really resonated with me. Whatever that record with Float On was; it was okay.
This one just seems like blatant rips, knocks and rehashes.
Sorry for being a party-pooper.

Re: Modest Mouse fans?
Yeah I much prefer early Modest Mouse. Lonesome Crowded West is by far my favourite followed closely by the Moon and Antarctica and This is a Long Drive.
I still like the newer ones though. We Were Dead and Good News were the albums that I was first introduced to but I feel like they have high points and low points, whereas the earlier ones are just solid all the way through.
But I still really like this album. Just got through my second listen. I do see where you're coming from though. For instance, God is an Indian and You're an Asshole just sounds like it was ripped from Lonesome Crowded West. The Tortoise and the Tourist feels like a rehash as well. I'm not saying that's a bad thing though; I still really enjoy those songs. And I absolutely love Sugar Boats. Pistol is just weird in a mostly good way. The only song I'm not totally sold on is Ansel

Re: Modest Mouse fans?
Pistol was the one I had to shut off, recompose myself, take a deep breath and go back in on... hahahaha...
not sure I fared any better, the second time around.
I get the intention... just... yeah. Maybe I'm old? Probably.
There's one song on there (don't have the title handy to ref)... the vocal melody is a total rip of an 80s or 90s song... I couldn't put my finger on it.
At first I thought it was Michael Jackson; then, I thought Men at Work? LOL
I dunno. I'll have to revisit it.

Re: Modest Mouse fans?
I really like the album. Pistol was a total dud IMO, but other than that pretty great. Definitely reminded me mostly of rehashing ideas of songs from before, but on songs that remind me a lot of their other ones there is always some sort of redeeming quality, like a really cool dizzying modulation on the guitar, lots of cool fuzz sounds, stuff like that. I dig it. I think there are a couple that will really stand the test of time and some that will dissapear in their catalog. With that I will flip back to side A and listen again!

Yeah, Pistol is a piece of shit. Couple of listens in and it's growing on me...but I'm not overwhelmed with it.

big mo mo fan, listened to some of the new one, and like the last few it just takes me a few listens to figure out what he is doing
i think it is a pretty cool concept to take parts of already released songs and make them into something different-- that's Isaac for ya
