Standing waves in Cabinet
Recently I have been getting terrible standing waves in my cab resonating off the back. Its a crate gs412 and is relatively old, i tried tightening the screws but they are as tight as can be. Should I retire it?

I tend to agree with stomach. crate cabs for the most part are poop. They are good to start off with and very few of the older ones were worth a fuck to a degree.

Yeah i needed one in a pinch and got it for cheap when I switched from a combo to a stack. Any suggestions for a new one would be be welcome.

we are all biased, so it's more of what you are playing and what your goals are with your tone.

I play anything from rock to black metal and as far as tone goals I need a cab to handle low end. This problem most recently developed when I got a 7 string

Re: Standing waves in Cabinet
That seems reasonable. I was looking at mojp tone cabs but its hard to get a lot of info on cabs not just there's. I mostly just hear people talk about Marshal, Mesa and Orange but no reason as to why other than they sound good as an explanation. Budget isnt a huge issue but it would take a lot for me to pay more than 500 for an unloaded cab.

Re: Standing waves in Cabinet
some crate cabs for a while came loaded with vintage 30's, which is usually not advertised on the cab and lots of people don't know it. the cabs themselves are shit, but if you find one with those in it you can usually get it for a lot cheaper than a quad of even used v30's would normally cost. it's totally worth it to buy those and throw the cab away and keep the speakers.
as far as cabs, there are lots of great options out there for super duper cool customized cabs from small builders. but if budget is a huge concern, i would seriously look at avatar. somewhat customizable, made by a fairly small shop of really cool folks here in the US. and their construction methods and materials are really good. pretty much as good or the same as most high end cabs out there. and they have great prices on speakers. if you've ever dealt with them, it's really easy to just call the owner of the company, dave, on the phone and talk to him about what you need. he's super cool and really nice and easy to work with. they don't really tout themselves as a boutique or high end company, but you get that level of product and service for super cheap, all things considered. i think they're just big enough that they have enough people there and move enough stuff to be able to use some economy of scale to keep the prices really good.
but i'd probably just buy something used. there's tons of great cabs out there. old peavey, mesas are great, orange tends to be expensive. lots of really cheap marshalls. even more recent marshalls are pretty good if you throw away the mdf back and replace it with a piece of 5/8 marine grade baltic birch, which you can get for under $15. the rest of the cab is made of good birch ply. for the record, i'm only talking about the marshall 1960 series. they make a lot of other junk.

Re: Standing waves in Cabinet
well I like krank because it was versitle. I mainly play metal but it handled anything I threw at it, The speakers are the Texas Heat by Eminence and it has tremendous low end without bottoming out or sacrificing highs or mids. In fact when I built my first cabs I loaded one with Texas Heats the other with Swamp Thangs.
I always recommend Krank to pick up on the after market cause the last one I got I got for 250 at a pawn shop. The cabs are also constructed like beasts. they handle 600watts.
I hope that helped with why I recommend a Krank.
