Tape recorder distortion/fuzz

Post by fcknoise »

Hey!

I messed around with my tape recorder, and I found that when blasting the inputs, the fuzz that comes out is really tasty. I made a video of it, and thought I'd share it here.

So, does this sound like the mid-fi demo tape fuzz? In that case I'm definitely getting one. :joy:

If you run it direct you'll get pretty much the same thing. Either through an amp won't have quite as wide a frequency range.

But the same flavor of rasp for sure.

I play through an 80's panasonic record/tape console sometimes for those tones. It has a useful 5 or so band eq as well.

Oh, I can imagine an EQ would be a very nice addition to using a tape recorder as distortion. Tomorrow I'll try different boosts and distortion for different results. And also I'll definitely try to get my hands on a demo tape fuzz

I use an old Bell and Howell ex-elementary school tape deck for these sounds sometimes. Unending trashy sustain. It's not applicable in every situation, but when it works it works great.

Brad played through a Yamaha cassette four track.

(Back in the day, some home demo folk would use "hi-fi" variety VCRs running at highest speed as the mixdown/master deck since you could get better fidelity than a cassete deck and it was cheaper than a reel to reel. I don't recall people overdriving them, but who knows?)

yeah, I've never heard of anybody using a vcr for the overdriven tones, only the mastering like Gone Fission mentioned.

I swear he had one in his rack when I saw the Buried Life tour... He's real nice and a member so maybe I'll just ask... Also I was on a lot of mescaline so maybe it was a 4 track...
