Boss dd-2/dd-3 self oscillate?
Acquired a box of mostly junk pedals today, outside of one gem, a boss dd-2. Didn't know a whole lot about these until today, but was suprised by the quality sounds this box makes, and actually like it better than my eqd disaster transport.
After spending a few minutes with this box, I was suprised to find out after some research this pedal was coveted by certain steven segal cork sniffing types.
I came into a few youtube videos of dd-2's and dd-3's doing some crazy excitebike type oscillating, but unfortunately my dd-2 does nothing of the sort.
Guess what I'm wondering is what dd-2/3's self oscillate. Apparently there are a few different versions, and the overall consensus I see doing brief searches is that some do, and some don't. Figured ilf would know best.

I will plug in my dsd2 in a second...its almost identical to the dd2. I think they sound great though.

My DD3 oscillated like a motherfucker. Started at like 2:00.

Fuck, I approve too, actually want to sell my disaster transport to buy another one, just want to make sure I get one that makes "fun" sounds. Having a pair of them at this point just seems right.
Any idea what label yours had? I guess there are blue, pink, and silver versions that come from Taiwan.

I think it was a taiwan silver label? whatever was least "desirable."

My DSD-2 is a made in Japan blue label (I think they all were) and I believe it has the same chip as the dd-2. It self oscillates at around 3 to 4 o'clock on the feedback. I never thought I would like these pedals and I'm glad I took a chance on it last week (haven't had much chance to play with it though). Very similar pedals.

On a related question, how hard is it to mod one of those to be momentary/true bypass?

Re: Boss dd-2/dd-3 self oscillate?
Opened up my dd2 and and found two trim pots, one mounted near the feedback knob and the other on the board. Unfortunately the one tied into to the feedback did very little in terms of regeneration. The one on the board gave me some ring modish vibes when messed with, but set it back to stock, bummer, no oscillo fun.
Luckily it was free and with some fancy advertising on the bay, I should easily make enough dough to buy a "proper" dd2, my adventure begins.

Re: Boss dd-2/dd-3 self oscillate?
You might find an answer at the StompBoxZone Forum (former BossArea Forum). I have had a few DD-2's and a Japanese DD-3 with the long chip (oh, that sweet sound!) and they all self-oscillate like crazy if desired. What I know, though, is that the 10µF electrolytic capacitors of lots of DD-2/3's have gone bad over time. I can only recommend to replace them. I doubt that it will solve your (not enough) feedback problem, but it is a fault that often came up in the last few years.

DD-3 here. Love to feedback it and then change modes and delay time, many fun, much noise.

It takes a good 10 seconds (on average) on mine and doesn't work as well on the L setting. The time seems to factor into it a bit. The really low time settings on short seem to be more difficult to get it going. Time at about half way seems to work best.vidret wrote:Ive got two dsd-2s and none of them self oscillate easily even at the most extreme feedback settings. It takes like 2 minutes for it to sound like anything but infinite digital repeats.
Also interested in making this happen
I did do something weird though: I though I could make a trigger out of my feedback loop to run the samples(basically a gated lfo). I used my digitech ex7 in flange mode to make the LFO and put it into the trigger jack. It was bleeding though into the sound. So I switched the knob over to short delay and I got a pretty neat glitched and modulated delay complete with wacky flange and random stutter delays. I don't know if that is supposed to happen but it was awesome.
The long chip sounds freakin awesome though. Def. Going to pick up another one of these.

Re: Boss dd-2/dd-3 self oscillate?
Dicked with my pedz some more this morning, and finally got it to oscillate. The issue was power related, it works fine daisy chained to all my pedals, but would not oscillate when chained to my v5 big muff. Gave the dd2 an isolated supply and problems solved. Should of checked that out from the start as most delay issues seem to be power source related.
Seems the easiest way to get this thing rolling is feedback maxed, and delay time set to absolute minimum. Instant noise and go on tuning away from there.

How does the Trigger In thing work on this exactly?
Basically in my head I have the idea that I would plug my Possessed into the Trigger In, and have the Possessed's glitches trigger new glitches from a DSD-2. Feasible?
