how long is the delay time? pt2399 is really only good to ~250ms ms before it starts to get noticeably crappy sounding. buy like .5 seconds it really is pretty bad if you are trying to get "clean" repeats. it's probably why you see pedals like echo dream, oh cool a distotaion and a delay of 1 second (or more?), but wait that distortion just covers up the fact that you cant use (a single) pt2399 for such long delay times and expect decent results, smooth move dba. ;)

I accept that some pedals are going to be noisy with a Fender-type clean.

And have things set accordingly and not maxed on treble in general - I could run at flat on the EQ and be fine considering I use stainless strings, very rigid (2mm) picks, and mostly single coil setups with a strangle switch.

It's a character thing that's what I'd say, most analog BBD delays have this behavior as well, at first I was also annoyed by it but now I don't even hear it as such anymore, clean delays are boring delays.

I dunno, I don't experience such extensive problems with the No Memory, I didn't like the Deluxe Pitch Pirate but mostly because it sounded really thin to my ears.

Not with me and I have a Vox style amp which is like the king of chimey cleans. :idk:
How does your setup fare with analog BBD delays like a Deluxe Memory Man? (especially that one actually)

I'm wondering if there's an issue with your power/grounding somewhere in the chain - what you're describing isn't something I'd associate with single coils and a Fender-type setup outside of noise unless you've just got stuff absolutely cranked to icepickland.

I'm hearing more noise in the background than should be there but that level of ticking doesn't make sense.

Have you tried it on a battery?

Ah, I have a 9v to Boss-type adapter with external snap for diagnosing pedals or for the rare occasion I want to run a "no snap inside" pedal on juice.
