Vintage Little Muff?

Post by Gracehoper »

I posted this over on thegearpage but the thread was swallow by the matrix pretty fast so I thought I might try here.

I just picked up a 70s Little Muff (with the old font, similar to the Ram's Heads) and it sounds pretty cool. But I don't know anything about the Little Muffs.
Usually I go to Kit Rae's site for my muff history lessons but the Little Muff section says "under construction" (and has been saying so for a while I think).
So can anyone help me shed some light on the history and technical stuff regarding these pedals?

The pot number says 1377520 and it looks like this:

Thanks for the replies. Here are a couple of pics.

The board. It says 1008:

A little hard to see but it has a couple of BC239C transistors in there:

And the cap that says 1377520:

I don't mind a little Muff myself. But I'd perfer a lot of Muff more. But seriously, how do they sound? I've never heard one. Love those vintage circuit boards.

Well... It's fun. Definitely lower gain than any Big Muff. When I take my BYOC Triangle and put the gain at 9, tone at noon, and the tone shift in the second position they kinda sound alike but the Little Muff is a bit more dynamic. The BYOC still seems compressed even at low gain.
A tone knob would be really useful, since the Little Muff is somewhat dark sounding. You kinda need to use a bright sounding amp for it. Last night I played it through a Blackstar Artisan 15 and it worked very well.

No clips yet, but I'll see if I can get around to record a bit next week.

So it's more like a pick responsive overdrive that can get fuzzy as well.
