Aen's studio diary SOUNDS ON p.2!!!!

Post by aen »

Hokay, so my new band is called "the Deracinators"

I am going to post a bunch of pixorz and words, and you will then ask me questions if i do not explain things clearly enough.

Here we are (L-R)

Matt (drums and stuff) Jordan (bass and stuff) Aen (guitar and stuff)

Image

Here are some of the things essential to recording:

Image

Jordan's girly marb light 100s

And Drum for us broke ass mofos

Image

Image

Some picture of a rasta choppin up a coconut.

We were working on Bass for "Isobel" tonight, whichis like this drone/ambient/hard rock thing about 20 mins long...we're doing the last bit, the rocky part, and Jordan decided he wanted a fuzz tone.

Image

So we tried a lot of 'em, and he settled on the blue box, with just a little bit of the octave dialed in. My DF and US kind of sucked the bass out, unfortunately... But I have LOTS OF GUITAR left to record :thumb: If I were the bass player, I would not have chosen the bluebox, it sucks some bass, too, but I'm not gonna step on Jordan's sac. Yet.

Image
We also considered an Analog delay freakout at the end, but uh, we didnt try it tonight.

BTW, thats my bassman piggyback, it's for sale. We put a big fuckin CAD kick drum mic on it for the low tonez.

Image

I was producing/engineering all night. BOOOOORING.

Image

Anyway, Jrdan got it in like, 2 takes, and we moved on to the drums.

Image
Cad kick mic in teh hole LOL

Image
CAD uh, drum type mic mounted on the snare for special "crack" sound capture.

Image
Image

A pair of condensers to catch the cymbals and toms, and then the "expensive condensor" about ten feet off, for teh albini tonez. I forgot to take its picture though.

As you may know, drums are really loud, so you need to isolate your ears to hear the tracks in yr headphones. MOst people would do this with isolation headphones, but we use normal headphones and a winter hat.

Drum action shots:

SOmetimes, the stuio is very frustrating, adn you have to take a hatchet to a nickel.
Image

Anyway, Matt gort really tired from the rocking

Image

And then Matt ook this picture while urinating.

We're not getting the best sound form the drums, I'm considering moving the room mic back quite a bit for more ROOMPH. I hate fucking around with EQ so after the fact so hopefully ROOMPH will do it. And since MAtt and I improvised the whole guitar/drone/drum take, I have to go back and learn some cockamamie guitar part that I'm sure follows no kind of musical logic,a nd has lots of F'd up changes Jordan said it was a major bitch, and that I play wierd.

Hopefully sunday We'll get the drums done, and I can unleash 85 watts of tube terror.

Very nice Aen.
How do you like the CAD mics?
I bought a set of CAD drum mikes and love them for recording and live bass.
How come you didn’t let the bass player try your BIT? Sorry don’t remember what else you have.

I traded my BIT for the DF.

Anyway, the best drum track I ever recorded was with the 2nd cheapest CAD drum mic kit. Ive recorded some pretty shitty ones, too, but yeah, they really kick ass. The "expensive condenser" mentioned is also CAD,a dn is sooooooooo great on vocals and acoustic instruments.

Good stuff, man!

DIY recording is rather interesting, we actually did a 3-song demo by ourselves last october-november. Unfortunately it was a bit rushed, but maybe the next one will be better.

Oh.....so you're British! And that "old pal Aen" routine is just a character that you've invented.
I get it now.

Pictures of studios is great escapism for people not lucky enough to have a good band rehearsal space

Okay, we've got a shitload more pictures.

First and foremost, Matt has been learning the engineering/production side of things, and thank fucking god, I just wanna rock!

Image

Image

Image

We've also incorporated a bit of my shitbox DJX keyboard intoa song, not sure how that ones shaping up, but its super mellow.
Image

We've been doing a bit of writing as well as recording, and we put the main drum track down on thursday night,

Image

The borked crash that is crucial to our drum tonez, for real.

And an arty shot of teh kit
Image

which meant sunday night I GOT TO ROCK!

Image

Image

I kind of blew my plan to do two guitar tracks, and played some cock-assed conglomoration of the two ideas
Image

Image

Also matt got this sticker-

Image

Presumably on Saturday or sunday, but he had that shit on tonight still.

Ok, heres the "far away mic"

Image

And now some gear featured on the new deracinators song:

Image

Lyrics on the floor, that counts as gear.

Image

Un-nicknamed 50s classic tele.

Image
Wah, Devi ever TP, EHX #1 Echo

Image
PAWG

Image

Handy dandy red marker makes sure i get that shit right.

Image
Hoses that go "hoot hooot hoot" when you spin them

Image
Image

Artsy pedal shot haha
Image

And, uh, htis is what it looks liek when i step on them.
Image

I will admit that even though the temp tops out around 48 F down there, I took of my sweatshirt, so I wouldnt look so fat (and therefore cooler) in the pictures.
