what wah do you like?

Post by tuj »

So I've played just a few. Standard Crybaby I don't like because they always seem to have the pot or linkage go bad. I liked the optical Morley wah's well enough, but I wish there was more adjustments in the sound. Also wasn't true-bypass, the one I had, so that was a bummer.

What wah pedals are you guys using and liking?

I had a Morely optical one (I can't remember the model but it was a pretty base standard one) and I agree that it just didn't have enough modifaction to the sound. I would describe it as subtle at best. At least to me.

I currently have a standard crybaby (about 10 years old) and it's kind of boring sounding too. I never feel like I get a good sweep from the pot. However, I have never had an issue with the build quailty but the linkage and string always struck me as a silly design (even if it is standard).

I always wanted the Parachute Pedal but that Mu-Tron wah/volume that guy posted in the pedal board thread looks really neat.

I had the standard, and it ended up dying, so now I'm working on stuffing the guts into a single knob enclosure with an LED and true bypass, a diy fixed wah/filter. After that I had the Dunlop Crybaby from Hell, the Dimebag Darrell signature model. It has a ton of tweakability, which I actually found to be too much...I'd rather have a wah that you just plug and play and sounds great.

For the sweep issue, without major modification, have you tried adjusting where the rack sits on the gear?

No, I don't have a wah pedal currently, but I'm thinking I might like one and I'm trying to figure out which direction to go in.

I got a used beat up CAE wah a monthish ago from CME. It stands up to the hype and totally rules. Both fasel things are totally useful and useable if you tweak the trim pots to what you want. Boost is super useful too. Got it for about $100 since coupon codes apparently work with used gear too :)

More talking:
I have the yellow fasel set obnoxiously nasal and loud so it is present with a bunch of fuzz after it. I have the red fasel turned all the way down so the sweep is really narrow (my favorite setting so far). The red set like that sounds like a manual univibe (never had a vibe pedal so take my grains of salt)

Wilson Freaker. Based on the Tychobrahe Parapedal, but really tweakable. Plus true bypass and an LED, everything I ever wanted in a wah.

Seconded - my bandmate has one, and it is huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge sounding. He's had other wahs before, and I've been with him on gear-research trips to try wahs out, but nothing has compared to the Wilson.

Yea, didn't even know that Wilson one existed. Let me know what you think, but it sounds like what I was looking for too! Thanks bigchiefbc and jrmy.

No prob! Wilson makes a bunch of different wahs, and seems to be top-notch at the wah game... from all reports, he's really nice to deal with, too.

Do you use the freaker wah + tone machine octave up combo? if so how does it sound?

My experience is limited but my favorite so far is a Morley switchless wah (not a Bad Horsie, just a regular ass wah). I "upgraded" to an Ibanez weeping demon because it seemed more flexible. But in the end I just adjust all the knobs so that it sounds like the Morley did. Also, the sweep of the Ibanez is much more abrupt and awkward, while the Morley felt more smooth and even.

I don't use the octave up on the Tone Machine all that much, I usually leave it on the normal fuzz mode. But yes, I use the Tone Machine and the Freaker together constantly. In fact, a lot of times at gigs, I just leave the wah and the tone machine both on in the loop of my LS-2 so I can engage them both together. It creates this awesome squalling sound that I over-use like hell. The crowd seems to dig it. :joy:

I have rehearsal tonight, I'll give the octave-up a try with the freaker and report back.

I used to love my Morley switchless wah; I really liked the fact that it was spring loaded and I could just step on it and start wah'ing away. There was also kind of a cool tremolo effect I could get by tapping the wah from off to on really fast. It was cool, probably stayed with me the longest. I always wanted one of those Snarling Dogs wah's that are also a ring mod (the yellow one) but after doing some research, it appears that the Mold Spore tends to blow apart a certain component when it gets hit with any kind of voltage above 9.1v. Kind of lame, and the company is out of business. I have a broken Mold Spore somewhere in storage I never did get to work.

What I didn't like about the Morley was that it seemed very high-pitched to me; like it worked much better on the higher notes than the lower notes. Also, not true bypass, don't like that.
