Mmmmmm well Road Bull covered all the bases, so... I'd say the only down side of that specific kit in comparisont o what sounds like your dream kit is the kick drum. It's got a 24" yet a true Bonham kit has a 26". Honestly though, the 24" is gonna be easier to set up and play for a newish drummer than a 26". With a 26" you really gotta know how to set up a kick drum pedal as you have to raise the beater up, then adjust the angle so its not slapping against your shin when you play, then after that you gotta adjust the spring tension to make up for putting the beater in a different place. So yeah I'd say that kit as a whole is a great welcome to drumming package thats definitely worth $1200, and come on your whiskey if you got $1000 cash you can find a way to get the other 200 with the quickness.

So its time to pay for the new kit!!!!

Getting the Dark Horse 26 / 14 / 18 kit I posted a few pages back.

So here's the question.... It's got Remo heads on it currently (Pinstripe bass batters, remo ambassador coated tom batters and clear ambassador reso's) but I usually use Evans heads (I think they last longer and I like their tone as they seem wetter sounding than remo's). So I've been doing some comparisons of just getting new remo batters and leaving all the reso's that are currently on it on it, or getting all new evan's heads (G14 batter's and G12 reso's for the toms, EMAD HD for the kick and stock reso). It's $3 more to get all new evans top and bottom than it is to just get Remo batter's plus a kick pillow (I wouldn't need one with the Evans as I'll use an EMAD HD, but the Remo pinstripe would def need one).

I'm thinking of just getting the Evans but I haven't used the G14's and G12's before but their description is exactly what I'm looking for. So kinda hoping someone else might be able to chime in and help me decide.

I say throw Evans on it. I put Evans on my kit and they transformed it from a crappy kit into a far less crappy kit. Remo are ok. Evans are awesome. Just my opinion.

I am running Remo Emperors clear all on all the batters and Remo Ambassadors on all the resos. I have similar sizes, except for my 16" floor tom. You don't have to have pillows or foam rings if you don't want. I am running one 3.5 inch felt strip about 5-6 inches from bottom of hoop across the inside and wide open on the front. I love it! I can find you a link of what that sound like with someone running that set up, but in the end, what sound are you shooting for?

buy once, cry really hard, once.

but just the shells are 1200 new, and I cant find them used anywhere...... but I should be able to swindle the fixins for cheap

and the wife is like "youre not even a drummer" :-p

I want a deep wet sound. My old Keller shell'd kit (an OCDP custom) sounded amazing with Pinstripe tops and Emperor bottoms but it had a little less sustain than I want now and they died really quick, but I was playing grindcore not doom at that time.... Maybe I'm OCD and weird but the felt strip technique just doesn't appeal to me.

Honestly, I know your gonna want loud and low sounding drums. That kit you posted is alot more likely to get you there than the Luddy kit. Acrylic = LOUD AS PISS. The Luddy will be warmer and more "musical" by comparison, but the Acrylic will be akin to your Vintage SVT's while the Luddy would be more like a boutique 200w head. The 200w may have a better toan but the SVT will pummel it to death with volume.

Ahh, OK. I didn't know if the Bonham angle was a drive. Knowing that, I would say that I agree with your buy one, cry once. Because if you don't, you will always have to live in wonder.

The drummer in me would rather play a small jazz kit over nothing, but I am so happy it took me as long as it did to come to a resolution on my Ludwigs. I originally was going a bit more conservative with some smaller sizes. And, like you I found a tempting deal on a "Bonham" acrylic kit. Except it had a 24" bass drum and 13" tom. In the end, I passed and ordered a classic maple kit. The acrylic kit overall are a bit more expensive. For comparison, maple vs. acrylic be is roughly $2100 vs $3200.

I would save your money for "the one" and keep saving. Don't hold out for a complete kit. You can get everything you want pieces at a time. GC used is a good place to pick up your Paistes. Not too often drums. CL here and PWX cand find some gems.

@whiskey I would say get the 26" unless you want to be super technical. They are plenty loud. I can actually hear my bass drum over all the amps at practice. This is physically damn near impossible with smaller over muffled drums. No one has any difficulty hearing my cymbals. The hunt begins.

I always maintain the stance that playing heavier does equal to being louder. Any time I had an issue of not being heard, I practiced till I played harder naturally. It didn't happen often I was drowned out.
