Bass 4x12

Post by Hagel123 »

what is the best bass 4x12 out right now? I am interested in getting one. Would a custom build be worth it or something from a bigger company?

I'm using a Schroeder 4x12 right now, with an Ampeg SVT CL. I'm playing a Mexican Fender Jazz though, not a Rick. We tune to D standard or drop C. I tried some 15s and 18s but the low C/D would sound sloppy and undefined to me and I wasn't super happy. And I've just never been a fan of 10s - some people sound amazing with them but it just never felt right when I played them.

I love the Schroeder - it is very clean and powerful and imo it lets more of the amp and bass tone through. I've played with many other cabs and I felt that sometimes the cab would color the sound more than I wanted. Some people like that, and that's cool but I like this setup more.

"The best" 4x12 is a totally individual choice but I am quite happy. Schroeders are expensive though - if you look for one, definitely go used.

Thank you! I also play in d standard and I'm just not happy with how my rig has been sounding lately. It gets muddy and loose, and I want something with a bit more definition and dispersal. I will look into that company right now

Not that many companies make a bass 4x12, but of the ones that do I always hear really good things about Schroeder as well. Especially compared to Mesa Boogie, which is the other big mass produced one. Most of the other models I've seen available are from boutique builders and I haven't read or heard much about them compared to other models.

I used to play a massive fuckin Sunn 412LH and that was my favorite bass cab ever until it came to moving it and then whiskey swindled it away. I miss playin bass through 12s.

I use an Ampeg V2 412, with the stock speakers it doesn't get a ton of bass, but I want to put some Eminence deltas in it. Currently it's the perfect bass vi cab

There's the Bergantino NV412 for that sealed type of sound. I think there's a few people here on ILF that have some and love them. DannyW likes his Aguilar 412 a lot, I think it's similar to the Mesa 412. Avatar makes a 4x12 but I hear it's kinda crappy, however, their 2x12 isn't that bad from what I've heard. I have one but it has a ripped speaker so I can't judge 100%, but it does sound pretty good. I can imagine two of them sounding even better. For a while I really wanted to save up for a pair of Schroeder 4x12 and run them as a full stack, but one alone is pretty pricey. I've also read a lot of people really enjoy old Ampeg V4 and V2 4x12's with bass once they replace the speakers and insulate the inside.

I think the ampeg route is gonna have to be my best bet. All the other cans run about 1500 and that's just a lot of money to spend on something that I might not want in a few years of my tastes change. A tight, fast response is what I'm looking for while still maintaining crushing bass. I will keep y'all informed as the process continues. Hell, I might just go 810 and say fuck it

810's are great as long as you're pushing enough power to them!

Good call on the Aguilar, they make some great gear.
unrelated to their cabs - I put an Aguilar preamp in one of my MTDs and it absolutely put it over the top. the bass always played great but the stock preamp was kinda dull. the Aguilar is amazing.

An 810 will always get the job done and they are easy to turn over if you see something you like more. :thumb:

The Schroeder I picked up was used so I was able to sell some other cabs and basically come out even. definitely worth keeping an eye out for one, even if it's just to try it out and see for yourself what it's like.
