Replace tone knob with switch?
I've been thinking about replacing my bass vi tone knob with a switch. I only ever use it at one extreme or the other, and it would make going between them that much faster.
I've seen articles about all kinds of wiring mods, but can't find anything about this seemingly simple one. Maybe its just too simple to warrant an article? Maybe I'm just a noob?
I'm hoping for something silent. I don't want a pop when I switch it. Any ideas, tips, or instructions out there?

Re: Replace tone knob with switch?
as a Newbie at wiring, I know not much. But I'd assume it'd be like a 2-way varitone.
one position wire to output
other through a capacitor to out
I know some people do less than 6 on varitone, so maybe there's instructions for 2-way.

So the tone pot is replaced with a on-on dpdt switch(http://bitcheslovemyswitches.com/#!/DPD ... ry=5324038)
One side is bypass the other side is through the capacitor

I like not being completely dumb. But the graph paper and being able to draw a diagram really makes it look smart.

Re: Replace tone knob with switch?
I don't think that drawing is correct. The cap isn't inserted in series with the signal. It is placed between the signal and ground.
All you need to do this is an SPST switch. One pin of the switch connects to the volume pot at the same place as the wire(s) from the pickup(s). The other pin of the switch connects to one end of the capacitor. The other end of the capacitor is connected to ground.
If you want to keep the loading from the pot in the "bypass" position, you still just need an SPST switch. Connect one end of a resistor equal to the previous pot's value to the volume pot at the same place as the wire(s) from the pickup(s). Connect the other end of that resistor to one side of a capacitor. Connect the other side of that capacitor to ground. Connect one pin of the switch to one side of the resistor, and connect the other side of the switch to the other side of the resistor.

Yeah you're right, I was in pedal mode thinking about having two capacitor choices in a passive tone circuit. Well thats what i get for trying to help so late at night.
Anyways this should be right, switchable capacitor to ground.

Heh... I know the feeling. I typed my post at about 3AM, but decided to wait until morning when my brain was working.wafl wrote:Well thats what i get for trying to help so late at night.

Alright, well I'm too tired to process this. I've read those instructions like 3 times and I feel dumber every time. I'll read them again tomorrow.
All I have here are dpdt switches.

Re: Replace tone knob with switch?
If anyone figures this out I would love to do the same thing. Right now I don't have a tone control at all, but I'd love to add a switch to get some control. I think all I want is a treble boost type thing, which can potentially be wired into the volume pot I think... then I wouldn't need to add anything... but then I would also have a treble boost whenever I am full bore, which I don't want. Rambling post rambles...

It will work on a dpdt switch. Just use one row only.neonblack wrote:Alright, well I'm too tired to process this. I've read those instructions like 3 times and I feel dumber every time. I'll read them again tomorrow.

If you ever wanna hear a guitar on another plane, just plug it into other types of amps.
your lonely pedal would be better off in a noobs hands

So I realized I prefer the tone knob around 25-50% rather than full, so nevermind all this
