Talk to me about spring reverbs...

So I had a search through the forum, found a couple bits and bobs on spring reverb pedals, but nothing really that answered what I needed.

Plus, most of em were pre-2013 and kinda out of date given the current pedal market.


ANYWAY. So yeah I'm looking at buying a spring reverb pedal. I currently have the TC Electronic trinity, and while I really dig the spring on that, I'm looking for something that is dedicated to spring reverb, as at the moment I'm really digging the surf vibe.

Looking for something as drippy as and wet as possible, currently I've been looking at the following:

EQD Ghost Echo
Mr Black Deluxe Plus
Solidgoldfx Surfrider III


Anyone have any experience with any of these? Or can recommend any others? I'm open to suggestions, although at the moment I'm leaning towards the surfrider because it stands out a bit more in terms of features. I'm not aware of many other reverbs that have a boost footswitch on em!


But yeah, most important things for me are tons are decay/springiness(?) and really variable tone that can go from super dark and moody to almost so bright it's painful.


FYI I am not looking to necessarily replicate THE Fender spring reverb sound, although I am open to it if it fulfills my needs.

The Cathedral's spring modes are pretty good, plus having the delay time and feedback tweakable gives it a lot of flexibility and potential for weird sounds. I was gonna say the Spring Chicken but that doesn't have a tone control.

The spring is probably my least favorite of the Cathedral modes, but a) I'm not a spring guy unless it's a real outboard tank and b) it's still miles above any of the other EHX spring reverbs. Plus you get the footswitchable infinite reverb/hold/drone thing, and it's a discreet 4-holer so you can run stereo, do feedback loops, cascade one channel to the other, run it in multiple places in your chain etc. If you've got a local store that carries EHX, it's worth sitting down with one and seeing if it'll roll you socks up and down.

I oersonally use the Spring mode on my Hardwire Supernatural, I use it way more than any of the other modes combined. One of the best spring reverbs I have played first hand. I tried the surf rider when we had the ILF Solid Gold tourbox. It was not as impressive as the rest of the pedals I tried of theirs. Not sure how it compares to other reverbs, but it didn't stand out among their line up.

In my last band the other guitarist had a Ghost Echo, and it sounded sooooo good. Not exactly "Springy" but it still has a surfy vibe.

Malekko Spring Chicken! Ghost Echo is great too, not drippy though. More atmospheric.

i have a ghost echo and i absolutely love it. it does fantastic with dirt, much better than almost any other reverb i've tried, and i tried a lot in my search for one that does well with dirt. i agree that there are springier sounding reverbs out there, but it does kind of have that vibe. however, it does not have a tone control and might not have that range that you're looking for.

i also really like the sub decay spring theory. great sounding pedal, although it also lacks a tone control. but worth looking into.

i used to have a cathedral and i loved the feature set, but i didn't actually get along with the sound. the spring in particular sounded shitty with very much dirt in front of it, although i didn't love any of the verbs. it wasn't terrible, it just didn't work out for me. i wish it had because, as i said, it has a ton of really useful features and great tone shaping. and i loved the hold/drone thing.

I can second Hardwire's spring reverb setting (though I have a RV-7). It gets super wet, much more so than my AC15. The tone control and dwell are also very effective with the mix.

The only time I turn it off of the spring is to use the reverse occasionally.

had a ghost echo as part of the Ghost Dissaster and it was pretty sick as well

Tried the SolidGold and it is a flipping beast
did a demo of it with some of their dirt on my youtube

Right now the Chicken is covering all my spring sounds with no issues, and I like the limited features, I have other jank with buttloads of buttons to worry about
