Need suggestions: want to buy a compressor today!

Post by Confuzzled »

Hey all!

I have some money in my paypal account and I'm looking to buy a compressor (hopefully today) but I need some suggestions since I've never owned one. I'm liking the fairfield audio accountant.

Thoughts on the accountant or something better?

A) what are you looking for your compressor to do (besides, you know, compress)?

B) have you checked out the Ovni Labs compressor page?
good deals are here.
flesh couch is here.

Never heard of Ovni before but I'm going to check it out now!

Primarily I want to put it before my superego that runs into my organizer, nova modulator, 2 delays & reverb. I'd like to even out the tone so the superego doesn't peak as much on the high end.

That Deep Six seems pretty sweet. Not sure it's $200 sweet though :s

The Xotic SP is rather popular too apparantly. I'm interested in it myself, cause it's pretty versatile considering the pedal board friendly size, which is another huge pro for me. It's affordable, and supposedly really quiet too.

I agree your choice should largely depend on what you're shooting for though. Based on what you're describing, I'd even think maybe an eq pedal may actually work out better.

I think a good place to start is just a dyna comp. The accountant is cool because its also simple (i dont like much in comps) and can get dirty easily while still sounding good. The philosopher's tone is a good one if you are wanting to experiment with a huge range. Honestly I think blend knobs on already lightweight compressors are kind of pointless but tone and input controls are always fun.

I like a dark chunky comps. currently using the accountant and dig it though its not that dark! Don't have many recommendations for other compressors because I don't really like them!

I generally hate compressors. Seriously do not want. BUT if I was going to get one compressor I would take the not fucking around approach and get this.

There may be some comp pedals that are equal/different, but none better.

I'm borrowing Chank's accountant right now and IMO, its a compressor for people who don't like/know much about compressors. Like me. I've only tried this and a Boss CS-3. I liked the Boss but it was too easy to sound bad. The accountant sounds good on every setting. Its simple, so no endless tweaking trying to get the perfect setting. It goes from barely there, almost just a clean boost, to an aggressive, gritty, kinda squishy tone. My favorite is somewhere in between. Less squished, more punchy, with a hint of grit.

It also plays really well with other pedals. Gives my dirt the little extra boost that I didn't even know it needed.

I say get the accountant. If you don't like it, I'll buy it off you asap.

If he is building stuff right now skully built me a beast of a comp a while back
I have tried almost all of them
favorite was the ibanez comp 2 - traded on here
The dirge replaced it because it was quieter, and sounded great
old ross circuits like the barge comp are my favorite
but I have had the empress and keeley and a bunch of others
and the dirge is the longest standing on my board of all of em
