SS/BS Mini or Fairfield Barbershop

Post by 74vibrolux »

I'm totally covered in the world of fuzz. I have an amp that I dig the overdrive on, but want something to gain it up a bit more between the natural overdrive sound and engaging fuzz. Something with plenty of string definition and sparkly tones. I had considered a ZVEX Super Duper until these two started calling my name.

Anyone out there have thoughts?

the mini covers all the way from supersaturated fuzz to almost almost clean, plus the bias knob goes from crisp to lo-fi and the eqs make it extremely flexible

the barbershop goes from clean to medium/mild overdrive and it keeps fantastic string definition zing at all levels, plus when stacked after other dirts it really tightens them up in a magic way.
it can a bit lo-fi with the bias at lower settings, especially the v2 version

i'd say try and get hold of a version 1 barbershop

Having owned both of these pedals, my answer is "yes", meaning buy them both.

However, if you have to have just one, based upon what it sounds like you need it for, I'll agree with the dude above and say a Barbershop is the way to go. But really, you can't and won't go wrong with either one.

I've had two Barbershops, and now have a Mini and no Barbershops, but wish I had one again to go with my Mini. Surmise what you would like from that.

I had both and kept the Mini because it was more versatile but the Barbershop
probably has the Mini beat for sparkly string definition.

A couple of others to look at:

Got the Barbershop today. So freakin' amazing. Throwing it on the board for a show tomorrow to see if I still like it in a live setting. But man oh man does this thing have what I was hoping. The tone and sag controls really have some cool possibilities.
