iPad Synthing

Post by askashrub »

The polyphonic microbrute alternative thread I started a few weeks back had some really cool app suggestions, and I have discovered a few more since. I thought I would put everything together here, could maybe even update this top post as good suggestions get added to the thread :!!!:

Animoog - Anisotropic(?) synth - http://www.moogmusic.com/products/Apps
Borderlands - Really, really cool granular synth. Arrange/layer samples as you please, and play them back in blips. My favourite - http://www.borderlands-granular.com/app/
Feed - Pretty looper/sampler, quite intuitive - http://www.theincidental.com/feed
Photophore - Flock synth that mimics animal behaviour (beeeeeesssssss) - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photoph ... 18617?mt=8
Samplr - Amazing sampler (intuitive slicing and variable playback) - http://samplr.net/
Virtual ANS - Draw sounds! - http://www.warmplace.ru/soft/ans/

I apologize if anyone that doesn't own an iPad came in here.
Because now you probably own an iPad...

Your previous thread made me want an iPad. I'm trying to work a trade for one but the dude wont return my emails. I blame you

Feed looks really cool. Doesn't appear to be in the US app store. :(

I had the same issue, I just googled it.
I am in Canada though.

I actually JUST wrapped up my first proper session with Feed and I was very wrong about it.
I thought it was a cool looking but relatively basic tool, with a unique interface.
Turns out it's pretty deep and there's a bit of a learning curve to interacting with it.
I can see it being far more useful than I thought.
Less gimicky.

There are a number of useful ways to interact with / manipulate samples, and the effects are simple and sound REALLY good.
I accidentally had my guitar sounding like the most beautiful echo-y ambient wash -- a sound I've deliberately sought out in the past.

Very lush, and very good for creating ambient soundscapes out of acoustic sounds.

Ended up finding something similar in the US app store called Keezy that was free. It's pretty neat.

Bebot is a lot of fun, and is only 2 bucks!
It's less of a tool and more of a toy, but I love it.

I recommend Soundscaper for all your glitchy noise needs, it's so good. :!!!:

I love thor, it's fantastic! My only problem with it is the unfriendly sequencer, but I'm waiting for Auria to release it's Midi version, then I'll probably make like a whole EP on the thing. :snax:

I have a 16gb ipad 3, and the synths and youtube sampling are pretty much all I use it for. iProphet is a blast. Nave and Thor round out my current top 3. Probably getting Animoog next. Alchemy is a good one for free instant gratification. iKaossilator is my favorite incarnation of the kaossilator so far, and it also lets you have it on your iphone or ipod touch when you buy it for the ipad. Even an old iphone is a very worthwhile instrument now, that can be had for super cheap, loaded with free apps and used in all sorts of awesome ways. I think phones will probably keep right up with tablets as far as live use as synth and sampling devices. The size preference could turn on a dime if android ever gets with the program and optimizes for media production.

Novation's stuff's good.

Nowadays, I just use Midi over bluetooth with the computer.
Good deals: OsbornKT, Phantasmagorovich, UglyCasanova, DarkAxel, Skip, D.o.S, ColdBrightSunlight, Eivind August, Goroth
