Fucked up digital sounds?

Post by Invisible Man »

I've been loving all kinds of glitchy electronic stuff lately--Flying Lotus, Aphex Twin, Kid 606, Matmos, Squarepusher...Though I also use chewy analog goodness, I'm way into pitch shifting, bit crushing, digital delays that sound broken, bizarre loopers...

I'm using too many pedals, but mainstays are:

Fat Fuzz Factory
Whammy V
H9
Moogerfoogers
Boomerang III
Bitquest

I'd love to pick up some inexpensive noisemaker-type things for signal obliteration.I get a lot of that from the Bitquest and the H9, but some other suggestions would be cool. Maybe a Boss PS-X?
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

If u have time to turn knobs, DD3 is pretty cool and pretty cheep. Sometimes I play it more then the actual instrument x) The feedback drones and playing tunes with the time knob and making the weird clips when changing modes is pretty fun for me.

The good old Whammy was great for fucked up glitching. Just play a weird chord through it and it would totally spazz out (a la Lightning Bolt).

Also, it's not digital, but the Mid-Fi Glitch Computer was fantastic for totally screwed up sounds.

digitech synth wah
boss syb-3
line 6 fm4
boss ps-2
digitech xp series (esp. the space station)
boss ph-3

all digital and fairly cheap except the space station.
also old roland guitar synth units can make some weird as fuck sounds, can be annoying to integrate into your setup compared to a normal pedal but worth a look.

Old Alesis stuff. Ineko, akira, bitrman, most of the modfx line is a good start.

Behringer BSY600 bass synth. Feed your fuzz factory into it and you got glitch city cheap!

I can't recommend this pedal. Lots of carrier noise, and it is eq'd weird so it disappears in the mix a lot.

edit: I can re commend the Electro Faustus Guitar Disrupter. It destroys everything.

this post nails it. I came in to suggest the ps-2 (it has a really cool ugly lasery thing you can dial in) but the syb-3 is an excellent suggestion I had forgotten about. The other suggestions are solid too.

BOSS PS-2, BOSS PS-3. PS-2 does some of the trashiest glitchy digital delay and pitch shifting. The PS-3 can be combined with it for ultimate un-guitar tones. These links mostly feature them as samplers but they do so much more.

EDIT: Fuck, I'm going to upload some more clips tomorrow of these two together, they're so dang good.

Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Get thyself a Lexicon Vortex and a Digitech RDS rack delay (any stripe, go for price).

LFO controlled/non-destructive time controls and one-shot-gone-wrong sample and hold on the latter, and the former, well....there is still nothing else like it after 20 years.
