Vinyl Slowdown

Post by christianatl »

United isn't taking any new orders until their new plant opens: http://www.urpressing.com/loyalty.php

We use Pirate's Press anyway, but that's still pretty nuts.

WTB: Chase Bliss Tonal Recall, Keeley 30ms Delay, cool fuzzes and hand-painted stuff.

Hopefully they will drop their minimum down to 100 like it used to be. Pirates Press is nice, but dayum they's 'spensive.

EDIT:

I wouldn't use URP anyway because oomany people I know have had problems with them. I just said that because its hard for smaller labels like myself to be able to press 300 + copies of a record. Small runs are generally less profitable but at least having someone that will do a pressing that low makes it possible to go the vinyl route.

Slowdown? More like "the speedup," amirite?

Pretty sweet for some companies that were probably on the brink of closing 10-15 years ago.

I pressed a few things with United over the years and was very happy with the whole process. Quality and sound, as well as dealing with their staff.
Good for them. They've stuck it out for the long haul. If you were buying underground/DIY vinyl in the '90s especially, they were very likely the source.

That's awesome. For vinyl in general and for United. I'm glad a few places made it through the hard times. I've dealt with United a couple of times and have even been to the plant. They've been super cool to me.

I thought this thread was going to be about playing 45rpm records at 33rpm, which is like, the DOOMEST thing you can do.

Disappointing OP.

I thought the same thing

That said, Lord Mantis' Death Mask is a great 45 to play at 33 :thumb:

I like playing Wolves in the Throne Room's "A Looming Resonance" at 33rpm too.

I've also found that most harsh noise records I own sound great at both speeds. Its almost like getting two records at once.

A decent grindcore 45rpm record will morph into a pretty good crust record at 33rpm.

I dunno if anyone used to follow the wonderful Cosmic Hearse blog, but he once posted a high quality rip of Ride the Lightening at 33rpm. A slowed-down For Whom The Bell Tolls is monstrous, and Hetfield starts to sound like a young Page Hamilton.

I'm going to need to go check my record collection, but I'm pretty sure ride the Lightning was issued at 33. I could be wrong though.

Edit: I just checked. My copy is 33. It's an old one too. No doubt you could still slow it down with interesting results, but not on most record players.

For the record, I thought cosmic hearses was awesome. Maybe it was ripped from a record player that had a 16 rpm setting. Not common, but I've seen them. Or it may have just been digitally slowed down.

Actually, I have a repress of Ride the Lightning from '88 that came as a gatefold with two 45 12"s.

Yeah, they re-released the 2xLP 45rpm series a few years ago. I don't have the Ride one, but I have the Master 2xLP which is 45. It doesn't slow down as good as the slowed down Ride rip that I have.

That's cool. I didnt even know about those versions. I have originals, but a gatefold 2xlp would be cooler.
