Peavey Special doesn't half hum
Hey all. I picked up an old teal stripe 160w combo which I have converted to a head. Its brutally loud and takes pedals through the clean channel really well. Its big flaw is the amount of hum from the amp with any kind of fuzz/distortion running. There is no hum without guitar plugged in so I assume it is picking up the noise from the guitar, however, every guitar produces the same results and if I plug into my other amps, I do not get hum issues. Any thoughts or suggestions? Cheers

Have you tried more than one guitar to see if the hum is any different?

Hey there. It is same with several guitars, all of which seem OK with my other amps?

do you have any florescent lights, a refrigerator, or anything that uses DC on that circuit? i have an amp that, if i don't run it through a power conditioner, hums like a MF. it's just other stuff in the circuit.. try unplugging or turning off other stuff to see if the hum goes away or lessens

OK, that is worth a go! I'll put that on the test list for tomorrow.

this right here is the cheaper sleeper
in the world of power conditioners
plug everything into this
furman ss-b6

theres always the chance your gear is humming
this will remove all external issues

Tried different circuit, not a huge differenceantennafarm wrote:do you have any florescent lights, a refrigerator, or anything that uses DC on that circuit? i have an amp that, if i don't run it through a power conditioner, hums like a MF. it's just other stuff in the circuit.. try unplugging or turning off other stuff to see if the hum goes away or lessens
I have taken pics, but most of the soldering is hidden underneath the board. Unfortunately, I cannot work out how to PM pics! Is it the same as posting on forum using a hosting facility?Bon Hoga wrote:Loose wire(s)? Bad filter cap(s)? Crack 'er open mate, take some pics and send me a PM.
thanks all!
