Dear ILD, I need your help. Hugs and kisses, Tac

Post by The_Active_Conundrum »

As Doomers, you all should know better than anyone.

How can I convert from being Doomcurious?

Parents were metal in the 70's but turned Christian. When I started guitar they taught me basic secret arts of Uriah Heep and Sabbath. I enjoy heavy chunks of wood, heavy-ish strings, riffan slow. Bass is my friend as are low mids and to some extent highs (as in upper mids). I am in the process of abandoning redundant noisy fuzz and getting into more riffable texture fuzz and distortion.

What are some recommended listenings (the best of the best and doomiest of doom) to help nudge an aspiring Doomer reach more Doom potential? There's just too much to try to sift through in various media with no assistance and no guidance from the wise.

I intend to listen while making art and wrappping gifts in preparation for the yuletide feast beginning on the Solstice and including Odin's day.

Thanks for your help, with any luck, I'll be posting in ILD on the New Year.

In the interest of being quick I would check out the following which should be easily accessible on something like Spotify.

Pallbearer - Foundations of Burden
Yob - Clearing the Path to Ascend

Both records came out this year and are awesome. Lots of places you can go with Doom but I think these are two that might tickle your fancy and will be easy to track down right now.

This list is going to grow based on what everybody else talks about. I think a lot of us could go on and on about High On Fire but Sleep is the more doom Matt Pike band. The Doom Room has a tendency to simply be the "heavy music room" and I think that's great.

Cathedral, Conan, Slomatics, Electric Wizard, Church of Misery, there are so many good doom bands out there that can inspire.

Mmmmmmmm many good recommendations so far. Can I ask what you tend to appreciate in music you listen to? Emotion, heaviness of tone, skill, groove, etc..... That way I could point you into a more specific direction.

For now, although they may not be labeled doom, you want the best of the best IMO: Neurosis :thumb:

while I want to kind of get away from speed, skill is something I enjoy in songs. One of my favorite albums is Dream Theater's Images and Words. Not doom. At all. It was Sabbath's Ironman that got me looking into prog because of the song structure and many parts. Not just verse/chorus/verse/chorus. But groove and heaviness of tone are both very important, I'd think.

Neurosis' Through Silver In Blood and Electric Wizard's Come My Fanatics... were my introductions to the genre as a youngin. Haven't turned back since.

I second Yob and Pallbearer. For current stuff: The Body, Thou, Inter Arma, Windhand, Subrosa, Primitive Man, Samothrace.

this has one of those riffs that kinda exemplifies the approach to me. Simple, notes are "played", not just fretted and strummed. Doing more with less. simplistic and solid. Concentrating on the collective sound and vibe over showy musicianship. Nicely done and DIY.

I'm pretty disappointed in myself that I've never heard of Ice Dragon before now.

Is that really doom?
Sounds cool enough but very much like Black Sabbath, or like a heavier version of one of those current 60's Psychedelic revival bands maybe.
I don't know much about it all but I'd expect doom te be... heavier...

If you like more progressive stuff, I'll recommend: Samothrace, Usnea, Thou, Ahab, SubRosa, the Atlas Moth, all in addition to the previously-mentioned new albums from Pallbearer and YOB, which I strongly endorse.

My favorite thing about this stuff is that it's kind of a vast umbrella. Earth's "and the Bees Made Honey In The Lions Skull" To Indians "From All Purity" Extremely different, related, but more by mindset than anything technical that you could point at.

That's why I love this. You can not fake it. It's not possible. I'm marginally interested in seeing how the whole doom popularity thing plays out. Dudes that used to wear make up are selling mesa's and buying sunn. But by definition, there is no real formula for this. Sure tune down, turn up, doom out works, but only if you are really feeling what you are doing.
