10" guitar speakers on the cheeeps

I just got a Marshall Club and Country 4x10 bass combo, using it with guitar. I played 4 shows with it so far, and the speakers in it cannot handle the 100 watts this thing puts out. Fart out city at full volume, plus I don't think they are very efficient.
I play Sheffield 1290s in all my cabs, and I kinda want to stick with that sound. I play sludgy hardcore. Mostly looking for volume at this point.
My budget is around $200. All speakers have to be 8 ohms.
What do you guys have for me?


As a caveat, this thing rips some serious face. If you see one I would recommend picking one up, or at least trying them out, a serious sleeper amp.

I thought the 410 club & country was a guitar amp, same as the 212. (TGP-ish info: SRV used the 410 early on as a loud and clean amp along with his driven Vibroverbs. Alex Lifeson of Rush used a couple 212s on Moving Pictures and on and off since. I was gear obsessive before I got into interesting music.) Open back speaker cab? What's in there now, Goodmans?

At your price point options are gonna be slim. Budget speaks from Jensen or Celestion, stuff in a buyout at Parts Express, the odd sale or clearance at a vendor. I'd maybe look into finding a deal on the more affordable Jensen Lightning Jet or whatever it is, the black-painted ceramic mag ten. I was scoping one out for a speaker swap I never did and people mainly seemed to like them.

Its the 4150 Bass Compressor from the Club and Country line. I dunno what speakers they are, they just say Marshall on them. Its open back.

I hadn't known about the bass model. It's gonna have the same problem as a bass amp that the tweed Fender Bassman did--an open backed 4x10 is going to have trouble pushing fundamentals on the low E. If you're going for baritone doomy stuff on guitar, some of the same issues will come up pushing the lows. But if you're shooting for guitar range, not so much worry.

The Jensen I was talking about was the Falcon 10" from the Jet Series. Tubesandmore.com (Antique Electronic Supply) has them for $45 a pop. They have some other choices in your price range, too. Look for power handling in watts and sensitivity in dB. You probably want something like 150 watts power handling to have good assurance a quad of EL-34s won't swamp them out, and the more sensitive the speakers the louder they will be at the same input power--I would try not to go lower than 95 dB and see if I can get close to 100 dB if I were looking for volume and headroom live.

The mod 70's look good. I wonder if the extra cash is worth the 4dbs added sensitivity..

4dbs increased sensitivity per speaker will be a big difference in perceived volume.

Spend a little more and load it with Eminence Ramrods. Easily the best 10" I've ever owned. Very well balanced, great with cleans or dirt, and they sound huge!

I am really diggin it. It has hella mojo, and for some reason it loves the strangest combonations of pedals you can imagine. I played a show he other day with a ibanez thrash metal into a rat.

Yo this is tight! I'm definitely gonna start looking into these more heavily as I build up my guitar/bass vi rig. I've really been meaning to get a Marshall of some sort. Does yours have a speaker out?

I'm assuming you know, but just in case, don't completely seal the back because the airflow is how the tubes cool themselves. Amps with bad ventilation are often notorious for dramatic meltdowns.

Yeah, it has a 2 jacks, and a switch for 4 or 8 ohms.
That feel when I have 4 cabs but can't use them with it because none of them run at 8 ohms...

I have a "U" of sorts cut out around the power tubes to prevent this. Thanks for the heads up though.
