Add to my list...

Post by samzadgan »

So as the impending move to the southern hemisphere draws near, gear choices become more of a reality. Having checked out shipping costs, it would be cheaper for me to buy more stuff and take back then to buy in Australia. With that in mind, i'm taking all my guitars, and since the new Monson purchase, i dont really want to buy any other guitars...on the amp side of things, i'm taking back my marshall super bass and 4x12 cab...i'm undecided on the Laney cub 12...so thats one thing to consider when compiling the list.

So the list...this is a list of amps that i want to keep an eye out for and buy to take back, along with a 2x12 cab. These amps are all sub £500, and thats the limit. The purpose is to have something different to the marshall, something with 2 channels, giggable if i ever do gig and take pedals well on the clean channel. So the list so far is...

- Laney VH100
- Laney Ironheart 120 (shouldnt have sold it)
- Jet City HDM100
- Orange Rocker 30
- Orange Crush Pro 120

I think the Ironheart would be the most versatile/different from your Marshall if that's what you're looking for.

not all my suggestions fit the 2 channel requirement but most (I think) might fit in the budget

beta lead
beta bass
peavey vtm
peavey butcher
NMV v4 (not two channels but fuck you need one)
nmv v2
silvertone twin 12 (raunchy as fuck you might love it you might hate)
orange or15 (best sub 30 watt amp on the planet)
blueline 4 hole svt (fuck budgets)
nmv bassmen
laney AOR
carvin 100b
sovtek 100
2203 (the superbass fuzzed while the 2203 being tight and overdriven was incredible)
mesa 50. cal (prolly not in your pricerange I know mesa prices across the pond)
marshall mode 4s if you can get in them cheap enough (yes im serious)
sunn concert bass

I'd go for an AOR series II or maybe try and find one of the later two channel JCM800s.

The Jet City amps are a solid choice though - I miss mine more than most of the amps I let go.

was talking to the wife last night and she suggested the Rocker 30 as she thinks thats the one amp that i really regretted selling.

but i dont know...this is a hard choice, because I dont really NEED any amps...I have my marshall, which is the pedal platform and number 1...and i have the Cub for lower volume and messing about...the amp in the middle has to be something very different rather than a back up i think.

also in the mix...i may still get a SS matamp style amp from wildebelor (midnight amps) based on his holy mountain pedal...so the more i think about this the more I think i want a high gain amp.

so...high gain would be laney ironheart...jet city 100...peavey 3120...laney vh100

what are some other high gain amps out there?

Randall Diavlo series :thumb:

You can get em in a range of wattages from 1w to 100w (the 100w is where its at of course). The clean channel is killer and takes pedals well, the gain 1 channel is a typical high gain dirt channel thats more american voiced (kinda peavey-esque IMO), and then gain channel 2 is unique. It's got a big mids pronunciation while pulling back the low end just a bit and tightening up overall so it works great for really really fast riffs and soloing. Then on top of all that you have a footswitchable boost that pushes any of the channels into super saturation. Put a Black Forest in front of it and its thick nasty sludgy grindy crunchy and blissful. Plus they sound killer with your new guitar, I know from experience.

If you're going high gain in your price range I think Peavey 5150 and 6505 are some of the go to amps. You could try out Peavey Ultra if you can find one. Maybe even a XXX.

I'm kind of bought in on Skip's Randall. The price point new is really good. Aesthetically I'm just super into that AOR/JCM/One Channel Amp with 6-8 knobs for twiddling.

Skip...i checked out the randall...the demo with black winters too...it sounds great, and price wise it seems good too, even new...but over here you dont see many second hand (at all).

You get peavey's coming second hand, and I've seen the 3120 for about £350/£400...which is good. Not sure about the 5150 and the 6505...whats the bottom end on those like? those models would be stretching the budget though.

Yeah the Randalls aren't popular really anywhere anymore hahaha so they don't pop up used much. That's why when I saw mine pop up for $400 I jumped on it.

The 3120 is the Peavey version of the randall basically, they are very similar amps sonically if you can scoop one for that price its not a bad deal. Alot of bigger death metal bands (like Suffocation) even use them due to their versatility. The 5150 / 6505 are not known for their low end, its definitely not what they are designed for but thats easily remedied with with a fattening boost / OD in front of it like a Black Forest or one of Nick's ODB's. They are more known for their cutting mid range and insane gain.

thats what i thought with those peavey's, i kinda want the amp to do it all itself...i would use my pedals with the marshall, and this amp would have all the gain i would want and reverb and i would use it as is.

Then go for the 3120, the 5150 / 6505 series also sound best only when cranked to live levels.

If I were you man - go the rare and vintage path. That seems more accessible where you are now than over here… trust me!
You can have any of those amps you listed, any day of the week. Chase the white whale whilst you can!!!
