Patchable Desktop Synth Kickstarter
Well, this thing has totally reached it's funding goal, so it's happening... I have to say, I've resisted the modular temptation for years now, but this thing is so cool and compact, it's pretty compelling...

Re: Desktop Modular Kickstarter
patchable != modular
Which is not to say that you couldn't interface this with a Euro system (or any other modular for that matter), but...

Oh c'mon, for a compact analog synth? For that price You can get ONE module of Buchla and only two to four modules even if You choose to go for Eurorack format.vidret wrote:i don't get this stuff yet.
in a couple of years i'll probably have a whole room full of it, right now it feels like a really awkard way to make noise and sounds in a barely musical setting for an extremely high price.
But I have to listen to the demos before making statements about the sound quality or usability.

Reminds me (in setup) a lot of the old Analogue Solutions stuff - the Red Square and Vostok especially - but at a much more reasonable price...

I know what you mean. It's steep but man, looks awesome and would be great way for me to try something cool. Ugh. If only I didn't have other things like responsibilities and such. lol
It's already funded too. That's crazy!

Re: Patchable Desktop Synth Kickstarter
This is not steep for what you are getting, this could EASILY be $1500. Kilpatrick makes some GREAT gear, very solid builder so no worries about quality. It reached it's goal in 24 hours and has doubled it in just over 48 hours. There was stretch goal addition of a midi looper, so you could play something with your midi keyboard, loop it and wiggle knobs (or whatever you want to use to put midi data/notes into the looper).
This really is modular because none of the connections are normalized, in other words, it doesn't make a sound until you patch it. It is similar to a Serge panel so therefore, it is modular but on a bigger, panel type scale.
I bet there will be some companion panels like sequencer, etc.
As far as Vidret's concerns, any modular is a blank canvas. It can be bleeps and bloops or beautiful synth pads, bass lines, leads, percussion, etc. It is up to the combination of modules present and the skills/intentions of the person using the modular.
Here is a patch that I made that is fairly musical and not too bleppy blooppy-

If you are on the fence about modular synths, I would say this is the absolute best way to try them out and get into the game. If I wasn't out of gear money, I would be all over this as banana format modulars are my favorite.

Re: Patchable Desktop Synth Kickstarter
I do think it's worth it since I've been looking into modular for awhile. I was gonna get some eurorack with the income tax but it's all sooo much I'd barely touch the surface of what I want.

Re: Patchable Desktop Synth Kickstarter
Yeah, that thing is VERY reasonably priced. Also, the person making these knows his stuff very well, this is almost certain to be very high quality.
If didn't already have an euro system (that I'm focusing on) I'd definitely get one of these.
For someone who hasn't got any modular stuff yet or has a banana system, this is great.
And this is modular just like Serge is modular. You get one panel, nothing is normalized, you have to patch everything.

Re: Patchable Desktop Synth Kickstarter
New Panel layout, the Midi Input has been moved and it shows the little midi looper and the envelope mode selector is now a buttons instead of a knob.
Those envelopes look awesome, looping envelopes is a great form of modulation, plus these ones can track as oscillators as well(!).

Re: Patchable Desktop Synth Kickstarter
Some more changes to the Envelope modes, I think they will make it easier to understand the modes.
Andrew, the builder, is taking a lot of input from people which is very cool.
I hope a couple of Fuzz Bros get onboard with this.

Re: Patchable Desktop Synth Kickstarter
When I first clicked on the link and looked at the picture I thought "cool! Kinda reminds me of the Kilpatrick format modular." Then almost immediately after that, I started to see "Kilpatrick Audio" all over that Kickstarter page. Talk about a
moment. hahaha.
Really, this is an amazing deal. You would spend nearly 3x that much just to get his entry level System 1... which doesn't even have as many features as the Phenol. Maybe down the road I'd consider getting into banana format, it's not really my thing at the moment... but, seriously someone needs to pick this up so we can all live vicariously through you.
