Free board space, need pedal ideas...

Post by frigid midget »

Don't really know what I want, I'm looking for inspiration for anything that's cheap and small, and can be used for either ambienty postrock, or heavy doom/sludge shit, or both. Something weird, or some sort of tool, a noise maker, compressor, eq,...

My EHX freeze kinda falls in that cathegory I guess, so something similar that can come in handy for drones and ambient noises might be cool. I've got the fuzz/distortion departement covered, I decided to restrict myself to what I actually use, opposed to what's cool/badass/new/fun. Delay: dito. Reverb: The plan is to score an EQD Afterneath when they start to pop up on the used market. I'm not big on modulation. There's already a phaser and a chorus on my board, and that's more than enough enough modulation peds for me. Loopers: They're come and gone, and I just can't get along with em. The loop mode on my DL8 easily answers all my looper needs. No wah, nothing unmusical or ring modulator-y.

It's got to be relatively small AND cheap. I'm open to anything, but I'm generally a bit sceptical when it comes to so called 'boutique' pedals. Most of the effects I like can easily be found from brands like boss/ehx/digitech/dod/mxr. I know that seems weird for an ILF forumite. Deal with it. :p

I'll be the first to admit, this is purely about filling up free pedal board space and giving in to my GAS.

I'll probably have to take a better look at all the EHX offerings. That pitch fork for one seems like it fits the bill. I do a lot of jamming with just a drummer, and having the option to mess with faux bass sounds seems kinda rad. Or maybe that fixed wah from mxr, the Q zone, if I can manage to find one.

Anyway, I know this isn't easy, but if there's anything else I haven't ruled out yet, lemme know :)

Define cheap - the Pitchfork isn't what I'd consider to be a "cheap" pedal by any stretch of the imagination, so I'm not sure where to go with recommendations.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.

I don't know what your definition of "cheap" is like, but Fuzzhuggers always seem very competitively priced, and Tom made me something that fits the "crazy noise action" requirement perfectly (I think):

I had him make mine with a momentary switch, but you could absolutely get him to use a latching switch. The pedal is basically the oscillation side of an Ab-synth with some extra goodies thrown in for cool weird bleeps / textures.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

Wouldn't a used Pitchfork be under $100 :?:

I'd say $100ish would be the most I want to spend, which I guess probably rules out most real boutique stuff, even used.

Behringer US600 gets you lots of pitch shifting fun for $50 brand new and they pop up for like $30 used from time to time.

Freeze and Pitchfork are solid ideas. Pitchfork tracks better to go by demos, but Boss PS-5 and 6 have intelligent harmony modes that work okay and that are also fun to intentionally freak out by setting them to the wrong key. I'd expect a few to come on the market cheap after the Pitchfork release. Or the Behringer PS-5 clone Trace just suggested before I could finish, which seems to sound dead on to the Boss.

If I decide to go with that type of effect, I'd really want to have the best possible tracking. Also, I've had one too many meh experience with Beringer. So unless something better comes along, I'll be on the lookout for a pitchfork...

There's a PS-2 for cheap on reverb right now. I've been talking to the guy, but nothing is stopping you from getting it. ;D

Running two right after the other would delightfully fucked up, I want to try.

I thought the Micropog was capable of doing the exact same thing...only better? :idk:

Just going by reviews, never had the chance to compare em myself.

The one for $82? Just messaged him about it as well. There are a couple on eBay for +/- $100 as well. Was kinda surprised that some were going for $200.

You're looking in the right direction I guess, that's actually the type of effect I first thought of too...But even after the 99th attempt, I couldn't manage to bonde with my BYOC SG-1 clone :idk:

It's just sorta unpredictable, I can't get the swells to sound the way I want them to :idk:

I got the best resulsts from the swell mode on my old DL-4, with a compressor in front of it. But it still was far from perfect.

I'm assuming the Mooer isn't spectacularly better in any way?
