Bass rack preamp?
I've got a bunch of slave/power amps and bass cabs around my house and studio and I've been thinking about getting into playing more bass lately. I like my old SansAmp bass DI pedal for gainy tones but not so much for modern, deep clean bass....ideally, I'd like to have both as an option as well as for my VI. Any ideas what might work? SansAmp seems to have quite a few models but it's hard to distinguish some of them from each other.

I'd consider the PSA-1 for a rackmount that will give you everything from clean to distortion - the huge feature of it being programmable and saving presets might be what you're after.

What's your budget? For that deep, clean bass a mic pre with Hi-Z/DI is going to get you there like nothing else can.
Not exactly rackmount...but I think this is an attractive buy:

Even more so I'm a big, BIG fan of UA stuff. If you have the means, get an LA-610 secondhand.
It's going to give you tremendous usability with the eq and compressor/limiter sections, not just for bass but vocals, synths, drum machines....everything sounds good through those things.
But that's quite the investment. A less expensive/extensive yet awesome-itself option, that can be racked is the 710 twinfinity.
But again, you're looking at about 5-$700. And it too is the kind of thing you'll want to use often, anywhere you can
Then just route from your fav pedal for bass.

For clean bass I like the Alembic F1-X , which can be had used for under $500. If you're looking to spend more in the $250-300 range I'd look at the Tech 21 RPM or VT rackmount preamps.

That Meatsmoke pre is what I'd hit if I had $900 laying around.

They pop up used in the 5-600$ if you look around. If I ever start playing bass in a regularly gigging band again that plus a SS power amp would def be the way I go.Holy Schnikes wrote:That Meatsmoke pre is what I'd hit if I had $900 laying around.

Re: Bass rack preamp?
Found a Beta bass rack preamp on the local Craig's list for $300 but I'm super broke. I lost out on one of these a few months back, I can't remember but I think that went for like $700. Stupid christmas. I'm surrounded by fellow atheists and yet they all insist on giving presents.

I use a Sansamp RBI as a preamp for my solid state rig. I love it and I think you can get them pretty cheap used...usually under $200.

Or a Moosopotamus or Viva Analog 360+ clone rack-a-sack-a-tone.
Or a custom-made Traynor TS-50B preamp section...
