Love that movie. Really enjoy the 'Directors Cut' too, for when I'm not trying to watch the whole thing straight through.

I love the stuff they did up to and including dsotm, with Meddle, live portion of Ummagumma and most of Obscured by Clouds being the favourites. I think of Piper at the Gates of Dawn as almost a different band, but it's one of my favourites as well. A Saucerful of Secrets and Atom Heart Mother are great albums also. So yeah, up to dsotm. Wish you were here and Animals are cool, and I like the Wall, but it's not what I think about when I think of teh Floyd.
They're basically three distinct bands, and the post-syd pre-DSOTM Floyd is the only one that isn't totally bent by a singular songwriter, which is part of what makes it so interesting/inconsistent, particularly compared to pre '68 and post '73. Like, The Gold It's In The... is just so 'not' The Floyd, you know?

You speak the truth, good sir.

And yes, Pompeii is amazing. Gilmours sound is  Basically that got me into fuzz.

lol my review came out with an opposition review from another editor. Who gave it a 5/7 and said it's a great ambient(ish) album

i don't mind the fact that there's an accompanying review. I just think that person has yet to hear a good album like that

I consider myself a pretty big Floyd fan, and I was excruciatingly underwhelmed by the new stuff. And I liked a decent portion of The Division Bell.

As for all the other stuff, I think The Wall and The Final Cut are almost totally shit. Not because of the reasons said, but because Roger was so far up his own ass trying to tell this story, that he forgot to make interesting music.

I'm also not a huge Syd guy. I think Piper is also criminally OVERrated. Astronomy Domine and Interstellar Overdrive are awesome. I'd leave the rest of the tracks honestly. Lucifer Sam is alright I guess. I think the rest of mostly crap. Saucerful is the same way. Set the Controls and the title track are great, the rest is meh. The live side of Ummagumma is great, the studio side is bleh.

Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, DSOTM, WYWH and Animals are all fantastic. That is some of my favorite music ever made.

I don't know -- I feel the same way about Led Zeppelin, so I can't really come at you with any temerity beyond "This is a self-evidently great record and I have no real idea how you could think otherwise"

Because I only like 2 (ok I guess 3) songs on it?

That's fine, except that all the songs you think are bad are secretly awesome, like Stethescope and Chapter 24 and Flaming and Bike and The Scarecrow and Matilda Mother And Pow R Toc H.

So if we accept the premise that the songs you'd leave off the album are fucking fantastic, because they are and it's about as inarguable as gravity, then you'll see why the record is so good. QED.

We could call it The Rule of The Sword, where a person who hasn't dabbled in a genre to any satisfying degree hears something that's representative of the style but is not, generally speaking, very good, and is compelled to function under the mistaken assumption that the album isn't actually a crock of shit, simply because they haven't heard anything better.
