Anyone know a builder who makes a cheap mxr distortion II clone? I hadn't heard of it before but I guess Billy Corgan used one for Siamese Dream. My favorite band Blonde Redhead is known for using them, too. Seems kinda what I'm looking for. I don't know if it's similar to the dist+ or what?

"Made by Mike" which is a guy who hangs at shortscale.org a bunch (here ever?) has done them I'm pretty sure. I seem to remember a dual he made that was Distortion II into IC Muff. Whatever could have given him that idea? Really a different animal than a Dist +.

Yeah, he's the only one I've found that makes a clone besides byoc. 8-10 week wait for a made by mike one :(

The byoc one is so ugly looking. Awful looking knob placement.

You don't have to build it in their enclosure.

Would it be hard to take a pre-built one and change the placement of one knob and the flipswitch so the flipswitch is in the center? Might try to score this cheap one on ebay and do that if it's not difficult. I don't have any soldering equipment or anything for that sort of thing.

If you like old stompboxes and buy used gear here and then it's absolutely necessary to have a decent soldering iron and a multimeter and parts like various electrolytic capacitors at hand. It doesn't cost too much and IMO it's easy to get along with a soldering iron. For example old BOSS DD-2's tend to go bad, because the lifetime of the 10µF caps is over. It's useful if you can do these small repair jobs on your own and don't have to bother a friend all the time.

Mike's probably done a stripboard layout for the pedal too that's probably out there on DIY stompboxes or the like.

Or if you're not into DIY hit up one of the sharktank builders?

^^^ This. ^^^

If you score a cheap enough one on eBay, you can always send it to someone to mod for you. Shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I'm hoping to get some equipment in a few months after I sell off a couple of pedals and pay for my amp to get repaired. Just took it to the shop yesterday and just have no idea how much it's gonna cost me.

I'll definitely look into the shark tank once these pedals sell. Thanks guys :)

This one has a great sound, but sadly not enough headroom. Even with volume fully cranked it is not loud enough. :erm:

I need to dig mine out of my unused effects box and try if again. I remember it being a bit finicky but it might be a good match for my old casios... :excellent:

For distortion: Holowon Umiom. Mad filter sweeps, cool gate switch, can get pretty gnarly and textural.
For overdrive: Infanem Improbability Drive. This pedal reacts to your playing like overdrive does, its not really fuzz, but more of a wacked out overdrive. You can dial in all sorts of stuff but my favorite sound I have gotten is overdrive with glitchy stutter and weird compressed bottom end.

SOLD!

I still vote for the Infanem Driving Notion. With the high circuit cranked, you get some metallic sounding aluminum neck tones. With the low cranked, you get weird gating and swells. Blend to taste.

I especially like it on bass with the tone rolled off. Sounds like a trumpet. Hit it with another overdrive and it turns into an octave fuzz somehow. So weird and awesome, and plays well with all my other dirt.

Now I need an improbability drive.

Check out PP's demos. Droolworthy, and guaranteed to turn your gas into a bank account changing decision.
