Name me a pedal that does the VOX AC30 OD sound

Post by Pepe »

A few months ago I sold my KORG ToneWorks 105od Classic Overdrive which was one of my favourite pedals for the last 12 years or so. I finally let it go, because although I loved its AC30-esque sound, I was annoyed by the silent but audible digital squeal that it produces no matter how you power the pedal. With a noise suppressor the results were only okay, but not fantastic. I had three of these units and all of them made that noise, although in different pitch. This is how the pedal sounds and how I liked it:

Do some of you know of other pedals (analog, if possible) that can mimick this tone?

I haven't tried it, but Catalinbread has the CB30, which is supposed to specifically nail that tone:

There's also the Tech 21 "Liverpool". I haven't tried it, but their Fender and Hiwatt pedals are dead-on ringers for the amps they're emulating in my experience.

Great recommendations so far! Keep 'em coming! :thumb:

Three of the four silver ToneWorks pedals are really good. The 104ds Hyper Distortion doesn't have enough headroom, but apart from that it sounds great and cuts through the mix. And the 301dl Dynamic Echo is superb and one of my all time favourite pedals:

These two 301dl's are the only ToneWorks silver pedals that I kept.

Boss BC2 Combo Drive is meant to cop that sound, as are the mentioned Catalinbread CB30 and Tech 21 Liverpool.

There's also the Menatone TBIAC (Top Boost in a Can) and the Bearfoot Emerald Green Distortion Machine.

The Bearfoot is probably the best of them, but the BC2 is pretty great too.

I've heard bad things about this one. It seems like it sounds okay-ish through solid state amps, but sucks in combination with a tube amp. Those who dislike it are people that I know for years and I can usually rely on their observations. I can still test this pedal one day to see if the desired tone comes out of it when used with my Marshall MA50C. The cool thing about the ToneWorks 105od was that it didn't really sound like a pedal - it sounded as if my Marshall was converted into a totally different amplifier with a really good AC30 vibe.

But I will go on the hunt for some of the mentioned pedals after gathering a bit more info about these. Wampler and Menatone might be a bit out of my current price range, though. Well, let's wait and see! :)

There's also the Catalinbread Galileo, or the smaller MKII version.

The Yojo AC Tone, or whatever it's called, is supposedly an okay sounding clone of the Tech 21 Liverpool.

Ah, please not a Joyo pedal. That has "Made in China" written all over it.

Yeah, I personally rather avoid Joyo/Biyang/Mooer myself too. Just figured I'd throw the option out there, in case you're a cheap skate or something :)

That's kind, because my wife and I really have a few financial limits at the moment. But so far it's not that bad. And I avoid those cheap Chinese copies of already existing pedals that you can have in much better and more solid build quality if you chose the original product instead. I don't have anything against "Made in China" if it is something that you cannot buy elsewhere, i.e. Hotone pedals which aren't copies or clones of other pedals.
