I really like the Probot record.

The thing is, most of the mainstream, commercially designed stuff doesn't hold a candle to bands that make music for reasons other than income. It's well documented that bands that get big tend to loose their edge. There are, of course a few notable exceptions, but most follow the Metallica template.bigchiefbc wrote:dase wrote:Not liking something is hipsterdom? No, it's more that I generally find that most people on ILF tend to get a hate on anything mainstream, that's all. If I had James Hetfields bank balance, I'd be quite happy to be sticking to the template.
It would get boring as fuck after a while though, so I'd probably go full Corgan and have some kind of synth out lameathon at some point, just to stay ridiculous.
I will say though, I have always wanted enough money to have a full gospel band complete with an organist/modular synth, brass section and female backing section to tour music that sounds like Parliament covering Sabbath.

Like I said, it was tongue-in-cheek; i.e. a joke. I just generally feel like I can't contribute anything at all to the music forum here because I don't know most of the bands that get talked about. When a band I know gets brought up, it's usually getting shit on.AxAxSxS wrote:The thing is, most of the mainstream, commercially designed stuff doesn't hold a candle to bands that make music for reasons other than income. I think they're ok. I don't complain if someone's playing them in the car but I don't necessarily seek them out.

Yeah fuck it, that just about sums it up.
Although, I suppose you have to hand it to Dave Grohl, he hasn't done that.

Re: The Foo Fighters
They've only released a couple of albums I really didn't like, the rest is at least OK. There's some massive tunes dotted around, especially on the colour and the shape (which is a large part nostalgia but shh).
Them Crooked Vultures proved to me that Grohl's still got it, at least on the drums. So I want him to do something more interesting again.

Ah, that's a funny thing... I didn't enjoy Vultures at all
seemed bland as...
And I generally do like everything Homme or Grohl make. The combo was just really underwhelming this time. Especially considering JPJ playing bass
AND the fact that Songs for the Deaf is one of my favourite rock records of all time, one of the reasons being Dave's drumming with Queens
Still really like Foos
Surprised Foos are getting much more flak than Weezer in my thread a few weeks ago
(for the record i expected to be condemned for mentioning Weezer in the first place...)

Re: The Foo Fighters
i've really barely listened to the foo fighters, so i can't comment on it much, but they seem fine enough for the modern big rock band thing. most bands in that category make me want to stab a chopstick into my ears, so i guess that says something for them in my book. i just wanted to piggy back on the dave growl seems like a cool guy comments, cause he does seem cool. i watched one episode of the sonic highways show and i thought it was really well done and really good, and more about the music history of city and the studio and the characters involved than about the foo fighters. i'll definitely watch every episode. and the sound city documentary was really good. saw it on the big screen.
he could easily live his life like a worthless douche bag churning out garbage like 99% of the other people in his position in life do. but i really respect the fact that he seems to be a pretty interesting smart guy who's been doing some really cool stuff with his resources recently. even if you don't like his current music, or any of his music, it's hard to argue that he's not doing some really cool documenting of music history.
i also think he's a monster drummer. really fucking talented dude.

They just announced they're playing a show Friday night in Nashville with a screening of the Nashville episode of the show. I'm pumped. I, admittedly, really like Dave Grohl & the Foo Fighters. I ain't ashamed to say it.
