I'm changing my bass strings for the first time since 2001

it 100% depends on the band and sound for me hey. Playing big gainy jesus lizard type sounds? Fresh strings forever. Wanting ridiculous dub low end and boomy fuzz? Same set of Rotosound flats I've had on my ripper for like three years now.

I bought a new P Bass Deluxe in 2001, had it set up and left the strings on until 2007 when I wanted flats...

Put some DR Flats on in '07 and they still sound Doomdub as Fuck...

QFT dead flats are what I play most, any brightness I can get with amp, and I hate the zinginess of fresh strings. Flats also growl better to my ears, and I get less string noise.

I mainly use my bass for recording things here and there. I change them once every couple of years once they start sound dull and loosing sustain. I love the sound of new strings on my guitar also.

I do like the reduced string noise of the flats. On my bass, though (fretless jazz bass) I have trouble getting growl and sustain unless I'm running a lot of gain. It sounds great with all that gain but I'd like to be able to get it with clean sounds, too.

I used to change my bass strings before every show, or once every three months (whichever came first), but lately I've been digging the sound of well-broken-in rounds through an OD. Now I'm starting to worry about how far ahead of a show I should change strings to give them time to break in...

The only time I changed strings in all these years of playing bass was when I had to take apart my bass to clean out al the flour stuck in to it, which even got into my strings. or when I change the tuning and put on heavier strings, which doesn't really count I guess.
I don't mind the sound of worn in strings, fresh strings always sound too 'clanky' to me.

A band I used to play guitar in recorded a music video, and the director came up at the end with 50 bags of flour and 2 big leafblowers and said "trust me, this 'll look awesome" and used the leafblowers to create a storm of flour. I played guitar in the band, but the bassplayer had always borrowed my gear, so I spent the following day cleaning my flour infested guitar, bass, both amps and cabs. My basscab still has white traces of flour stuck behind the grill
Of course, it didn't look that great, but hey at least the director didn't charge anything

Would be an awesome TV show though, maybe even get baked while you learn bass whilst you bake. I dunno

The last time I changed my strings was the last time I had my bass set up. And that was when I was probably a junior or senior in high school, so maybe 2008? Got some DR Lo-Riders on it, and I'm getting my $35 worth out of them. I was worried that I wouldn't dig the sound when they die, but honestly I like it. Not too mellow, not too zingy. Although I have thought about replacing them because I think the intonation is starting to go
