Weird tremolos?

Post by colossus »

I'm really wanting a tremolo again, but I want something a bit less standard. What's out there, besides the goatkeeper and tremelessence (sp?)? Any that can go into vibe territory? I'm definitely want something that can get me deep square waves -- maybe not repeater deep, but still deep. Random tremolo? Crazy modulated tremolo?

I've had a Line 6 and a Slicer and neither really did it for me.

I just got a gristleizer and it's a pretty weird tremolo. I just added a video of it in my demo thread. It's quite awesome.

If you want hard-chop only, the EQD Hummingbird is pretty great. It can speed up into ringmod territory.

On the other hand, the Fairfield Randy's Revenge is a ringmod that can slow down into trem territory.

And if you're still in RI, Empire Guitars is going to be stocking Fairfield any day now - I've talked to Mike about it, and they are definitely incoming (though I don't have a street date just yet).

I've also heard that the Seymour Duncan Shape Shifter is way better than one would expect...

Oh, and the Gristleizer. Hell yes, UG. :thumb: I am full of want for that one myself. LaoWiz has built a few of those, I know.

The Gristleizer and Randy's Revenge are way out of my price range. I wish! And unfortunately I'm back up in NH where the gear stores aren't so great.

Can ring mods generally get to trem territory?

I only paid 120$ for my gristleizer.

And yes, some do for certain.

Pretty sure the EHX Ring Thing could, now that I think about it, and that beast had a billiondy different sounds in there. It's also weird enough that it's not inconceivable to find one available for an affordable price used or in trade.

Warped Vinyl, Goatkeeper, and Sidewinder. Oh wait I have all those on my board. hahaha.

Dude. The Sidewinder can do trem with a photoeye that goes nutso when you mess with it.

Have someone build you a musicPCB Tap Tempo Trem maybe? Tons of waveforms and a random mode.

Yeah you can probably find a used one for fairly cheap too, I don't get along with trems but it was definitely the coolest I've played.

I may just go ahead and build a Gristleizer or Tap Tempo. They seem simple enough. I didn't realize the Gristleizer could be had not from EAR, thus my fear of price.

Yeah, as I recall, The Gristleizer as a circuit was originally designed as an amp-top unit for one of the members of Throbbing Gristle, hence the name. It's been around for a while...

EDIT: Here we go - from musicpcb.com: "The Gristleizer is a legendary effect, designed by Roy Gwinn in the 70s and made famous by industrial music group Throbbing Gristle... This effect combines a tremolo with an oscillator-controlled filter. The controls allow considerable versatility, allowing you to achieve sounds from polite, smooth tremolo and auto-filter wah wah sounds, to industrial grinding distortion, ring modulation, and hard stuttering effects." - http://musicpcb.com/product/gristleizer/
