Lipstick Tubes~!

Post by Isher »

I have no idea which one to try.

I bought a Douglas Pisces bass from Rondo as a mod project, and have been looking at lipstick tube pickups. Mainly, the Duncan one, the GFS one (I like that I can get it in black), and the ones that Mojotone offers (the normal Lipstick tubes and the Rene Martinez ones). Thing is, I can't really decide which one would work in a SCPB.

From what I've found on other forums, the Duncan one is the one closest to the original Danelectro lipstick tubes. I like jangle.

I put a GFS lipstick (neck version, I think) in my Musicmaster recently:

It's the size of a standard Strat pickup, so you might have to do a bit of work to make it fit in your bass. Depends on the size of the pickup in there.

You really aren't out much if you go GFS and don't like the tone. It sounds like what I expected a lipstick pickup to sound like and fit without a major modification to the bass or pickguard.

When I bought the Pro Tube Humbucker from GFS, I liked the tone. The fit and finish could have been a little better (one of the tubes was slightly askew).

do you have soundclips of your Musicmaster? I'm curious what it sounds like. Did you use the 4.9K or the 9K?

I got this one secondhand but it looks fine. Probably not as much risk with the single compared to the humbucker.

No clips since it was pretty recent. It is more scooped than a P pickup, kind of close to a Jazz or Ric bridge to me. It definitely has a brighter overall tone, but not as harsh or thin as I expected with the maple fretboard. A tone control takes out any zing that you don't want too.
I used the 4.9K version with 250K pots.

I tend to use 1M pots--I'm using them with a DiMarzio DP127 in my P-bass, but that has a pretty scooped tone but not many highs.

I might go with the GFS afterall.

Does anyone know anything about the random cheap lipsticks on ebay? $20 for a pair might be a nice way to spice up my Mustang!
