Grindy/Buzz Bass Fuzz; Opposed to Wooly Muff
Hi there.
Most of the bass fuzz variants I've tried have been Muffs. I really like the Wren & Cuff TFR, and I've used that for a few years.
But I'm looking for something that izzzzzzzzzzzzz... how shall I say GRINDIER? GRITTIER? BUZZIER? Instead of the thick/fat/woofy/wooly Muff sound.
I don't have an example currently, but I'll try to find something. As always, it's just something I hear in my head. Actually you know that Guided By Voices song where the guy is snoring during the whole song? It's on "Alien Lanes" or "Bee Thousand" I think, but I don't know the name. I'll have to listen to it when I get home. But sound of the guy snoring is what I'd like the bass to sound like. Is that weird?
Also maybe Eugene/Greg's bass sound from Autolux might work. Let me see if I can find a good example. EDIT OK I GOT ONE:

Pretty much just like that but maybe a little grrrindier.
THANKS!

Maybe something from SS/BS? Buzzz?

edit: didn't see the yt-link. To me that doesn't sound very fuzzy, more ODish. Mini?

For grindier bass sounds, I usually use Mini. "Sort of Rat-y but not quite" sounds
and you can control how fuzzy it will be with the Bias knob
Not like the Autolux sound though I'm afraid - and i'd be interested in that sort of sound, too... I mean Transit Transit seems pretty shit to me, but the sounds are really great (to clarify - I love Future Perfect, but it really seems they dropped the ball song-wise on Transit Transit)
For buzzy, I use a Fingerprint
When set right and played right, it can sound like a mean vintage buzzy fuzz
But i'm

Maybe try something based on a Super Fuzz or a Shin-ei Companion. Those are a lot grittier than a muff.

The BUZZZ rules, it's a tricked out Superfuzz, has a good amount of low end in the octave up setting, too. Mini will get you some grind but as said above not quite like a rat. It sounds a bit more... papery? That probably doesn't make sense...
I feel like that Autolux bass sound is more of a sweet distortion pedal than a fuzz, but I don't really know. I like it.

I was gonna chime in on the Superfuzz tip. Lots of stuff in this family: Ibanez Standard Fuzz and its Verellen Big Spider derivative, Kay fuzz, one of the Guyatone micros, Malekko Omicron series mini fuzz, Zvex Octane, and tons more. Effectsdatabase has your back on cross referencing.

Re: Grindy/Buzz Bass Fuzz; Opposed to Wooly Muff
tonnes of good suggestions so far
buzzz is backed hard
like others have said, i would definitely consider a rat variant , i'd go for the idiot box one, i think its called the blowerbox?
i use a combination of my fuck and rusty box with the buzzz thrown in for extra craziness for grindy bass
considering getting a mini to a/b and selling the loser though

I think Grind starts with a big amp and EQ. What type of amp are you using?
Also I agree with a Super Fuzz variant. Audiomonk Fuzz Potion get grindy.

Sample clip sounds a little like a Wooly Mammoth but not raging on full (or am I wrong)...
Also the Malekko B:assmaster is gritty and and versatile. (Diabolik too?)
