Basic Audio Scarab Deluxe

Post by Casavettes »

So I know I'm going to get a lot of :wha?: for this but
After checking out some demos of this thing, it seems like it might be able to replace my mini.
They both have that gated option but there seems to be a little less sag(?) on the scarab than the mini
I know that can be dialed back but I don't know, the scarab has crisper edges maybe?

I fucking love the mini man
It does a lot of sounds and does them damn well

Am I just talking crazy right meow?
I think I had too much coffee today and my mind is rambling
Which I guess are somewhat normal sundays for me.

I feel like the damn guy below me

i have both on my board. the mini is going to give you more volume for sure. I have my scarab as the 1st fuzz after my wah/filter. The bias knobs works great on both, but I put my mini further down the chain (and left on, most of the time). I'd say the mini bias rolled back is more lo-fi, where you can make the scarab spit and sputter a bit more.

I don't think I've ever played a Mini. So, I couldn't compare them directly, but you should've asked this question last week. I was just borrowing a Scarab Deluxe and could've loaned it to you. The Scarab Deluxe is a pretty versatile fuzz. It sounds great all throughout its entire range too. Don't know how its sounds may overlap with the Mini though. :idk:

(Edit: There you go. UnicornTrap beat me to it.)

That would be awesome man

Yeh i got bad timing chank. I remember hearing clips of it months ago and really digging it and I guess I just forgot about it?
Would you guys say volume was any sort of an issue with the scarab?

It's not as loud as some of the other Basic Audio pedals, but none of them I've played lacks in volume.

I had a basic scarab and absolutely loved it. I got rid of it because I wasn't playing too much guitar at the time. It definitely gets you some gnarly sounds.

i'm a big fan of running the scarab deluxe into something. muffs, minis, etc, all sound really good... even with the fuzz completely cranked, there's a good amount of guitar volume cleanup too

Yeah, John's got a great ear. Everything he builds sounds fantastic.

Yeah, the Scarab Deluxe stacks really well. A very flexible/versatile pedal.

Agreed, I liked *everything* in the tourbox that hit me.

I only had the funds to snag one (as the guy at the end of the line, I figured no point in shipping everything back and then just buying it a week later). Wildcat is the unsung monster of the line - it's not a standalone 'one fuzz' pedal but it made *everything* I stacked with it sound better and meaner and fuller. Would have half curious to see two Wildcats run into each other - Catception?

The unsung thing in the line though is the Lucky Number - certainly not a fuzz, but a modernish drive circuit that worked with VI, buckers, anything I threw at it and had more sounds on tap than I had time to find in the month I had the box so I bought it.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.

I thought it sounded pretty awesome on it's own, but I didn't have great luck stacking it or I probably would've kept mine. Maybe I should've spent more time coaxing
Some seriously flexible tonebending there for sure...
Special low-frequency version.
