12 gauge sets: wound or plain G?
I've tried both on my beater, and I like the way the wound G stays in tune, but bending is way easier with a plain G. Normally this isn't a problem because I keep it in open Db minor and don't bend a lot with it, but I'm about to put 12s on my Tele that I keep in Eb standard, and I bend a lot more with that.
Just wanted to hear other 12 gauge-users' preference for the type of G string, what you tune to, etc.

Anything over .11's I switch to a wound G. I just hate how sharp they can sound sometimes. And with .12's and higher, a non-wound G feels like a wire more than a string

Eh, I like a wound G, but if you're gonna be bending, maybe an unwound'd be better.
Try it with whatever the string set comes with and if you don't like it, change it.

Yeah I think I'm going to stick to wound G and do reps with tiny barbells to increase my bending stats. Or just stop weedly-weedling so much.Chankgeez wrote:Eh, I like a wound G, but if you're gonna be bending, maybe an unwound'd be better.

I mistakenly bought a set with a plain g last week (0.24) and it is horrid. Just sounds really lifeless, and still doesn't intonate properly.

For those who bend with ease on a wound G, what are you guys tuning to?

It's definitely a little more comfortable if you're tuned down a bit.

E standard or D standard on a jag (24" scale so heavy strings are a little looser). D standard is fiiine, as much bending as I could ever want except in a joke beater guitar, in E standard I can happily get up 2 semitones which is all that really matters.

I second what skully said about unwound heavy Gs feeling more like a wire. To me, a wound G feels easier to bend
I play 12s in standard, and 13-14s for everything tuned lower.
I hate flop.
